Cazenovia Closes Season with Loss to Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. The Cazenovia College Wildcats women's lacrosse team closed its season with a 7-6 loss to the Morrisville State Mustangs on Tues., May 1, in Morrisville, N.Y.

Cazenovia fell behind early when Morrisville took a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the game. Morrisville's Kayla Miller opened up scoring at the 28:52 mark of the first half. The Mustangs' Jamie Collins and Jennifer Caffarelli followed with goals at the 17:27 mark and 16:55 mark, respectively. Caffarelli's goal was the first of her game-high five goals. Carrarelli was the only Mustang to score over the final 46:55 of the contest.

Cazenovia would tie the game up with three goals of its own over the next five minutes of play. Rachel Simone ('07, Syracuse, N.Y. / Marcellus HS) opened scoring for Cazenovia, on a Courtney Caldwell ('10, Black River, N.Y. / Immaculate Heart Central HS) assist, at the 16:08 mark of the first stanza with her twenty-fourth goal of the season. Simone, who would score another goal in the second period, finished the season with a career-high 25 goals in 2007. Ranking among Cazenovia's all-time leaders in points and goals, Simone, who scored 12 goals in each of her first three seasons, finishes her career with 61 career-goals at Cazenovia.

Jaclyn Capocefalo ('07, East Syracuse, N.Y. / Onondaga CC), another Cazenovia senior playing her final game for the Wildcats, would score Cazenovia's next two goals and knot the game at 3-3. Capocefalo, who had a team-high three goals in the game, finished the season with a career-high 14 goals.

Cazenovia exchanged goals over the final minutes of the first half with the Mustangs and went into the intermission down 5-4 to Morrisville.

Morrisville jumped out to a 6-4 lead five minutes into the second half on Cararelli goal, unassisted. Cazenovia would answer with two goals, which tied the game at 6-6. Simone scored the first of the two equalizing goals, on a free-position shot at 20:23. Cazenovia's Lauren Paul ('08, Saugerties, N.Y. / Saugerties HS) tied the game, at the 11:11 mark of the second stanza, on a Capocefalo assist, to bring the game to 6-6. Paul's goal was the ninth of her season. Paul scored five goals in 2006 and now has 14 career goals for the Wildcats.

Morrisville's Cararelli scored the game-winning goal, in the eighth minute, unassisted, to put the Mustangs ahead, for good, 7-6. Morrisville played stifling defense, over the next 8:58 to ensure the win. The Mustangs' Stephanie Smith made three saves over the final minutes of the game to prevent the Wildcats from forcing the extra session.

Cazenovia's Samantha Maitland ('10, Morrisville, N.Y. / Morrisville - Eaton Central) made eight saves and allowed seven goals in the loss. Maitland finishes her first year in the Wildcats' goal with a 3-8 record and 76 saves.

Cazenovia improved on its 2006 record of 1-11. The Wildcats also won their first game on the road since 2005 during the 2007 season.
