#20 W&L Runs by Wooster in First Round of NCAAs
LEXINGTON, Va. * Sophomore midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) registered four goals and senior midfielder Kelly Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) recorded two goals and three helpers as 20th-ranked Washington and Lee downed the College of Wooster, 14-4, in the first round of the 2007 Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (15-3) jumped out to a 4-0 lead at 22:50 in the first half on the strength of two goals from Kelly Evans and another from Colleen Evans, but Wooster responded with two-straight tallies to cut W&L advantage to 4-2 with 15:15 remaining in the initial stanza. However, W&L closed out the first half with five-unanswered scores, which included two goals from Colleen Evans, to take an 8-2 lead into halftime. Despite the Fighting Scots finding the back of the net first in the second half off a free-position shot from sophomore midfielder Hillary Darragh (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Twp.) at 25:17, the Generals notched the next six goals as they cruised to the 14-4 final margin.
Senior attacker Karina Schless (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) had two goals and one assist, while senior attacker Mallory Lobisser (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Lakeside) tallied a pair of goals. Sophomore attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) registered one goal and one assist and junior midfielder Megan Slosson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep) and senior midfielder Maggie Megear (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each added two assists. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played the first 42:31 in goal for the Generals and made five saves before sophomore Ali Hillyard (Media, Pa./Episcopal) relieved her for the final 17:29 of the contest. Hillyard made one save.
Darragh, junior attacker Emily Baab (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore attackers Taryn Higgins (Marblehead, Mass.) and Carly Carey (Cummington, Mass./Academy at Charlemont) tallied one goal apiece for Wooster, while sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Dannenberg (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) played all 60 minutes between the pipes and recorded seven saves.
The Generals now advance the NCAA Regionals for the second-straight season and will take on host and second-ranked Salisbury at 11:30 am on Saturday.
