Mary Washington Eases by Eastern in NCAA Opener
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Junior attacker Caitlin Erickson scored six goals and senior attacker Kaitlyn Barker added five goals and an assist as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Eastern University, 19-9, on Wednesday at the Battleground in NCAA Division III tournament first round action. UMW, 15-6, advances to face Babson College on Saturday at 5 pm in Lancaster, PA.
The game remained tight throughout the first half, as UMW opened the scoring on a goal by Barker at 28:41, but Eastern's Kate Hoy (six goals) scored her first two goals to give EU a 2-1 lead, that stood until UMW tied the score on a goal by Erickson with 12:41 left in the half. The Eagles took the lead for good at 3-2 on a goal by Emily Talbot just 30 seconds later, and extended the lead to 6-3 with 9:05 left thanks to a pair of goals by Talbot. After Eatsern goals by Hoy and Jessie Basch, UMW scored the next four goals, including two by Erickson, and led, 10-6, at halftime.
UMW pulled away in the second half by outscoring Eastern, 9-3. Barker scored three second half goals and Sarah Finney added two tallies to lead the second half effort.
Margaret Murray had a career-high five assists for UMW, and senior Meaghan O'Leary became the first player in school history to surpass the 100-point plateau for the season with a goal and four assists. Hoy led Eastern with six goals.
Meredith Deitrick had 11 saves for Mary Washington, and Jenn Van Ness had 20 saves for Eastern.
The Eagles tie the school record for season wins with their 15th of the year, and will have a chance to break that mark on Saturday at 5 pm against Babson College at Franklin & Marshall College.
