Red Devils Fall in ECAC Semifinal to McDaniel
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Michelle Mullen (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) led all scores with four goals, all in the second half, to lead McDaniel to a 14-8 victory over Dickinson in the semifinals of the ECAC South Region tournament on Saturday.
Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) added two goals and two assists to help the second-seeded Green Terror (13-5) advance to Sunday’s championship game against top-seeded Cabrini, who downed Stevens 9-7 in the day’s second semifinal. Alyssa Crellin and Abby Larson paced the Red Devils (11-7) with two goals apiece.
Three goals in the game’s first 3:45, including an Emily Funk (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) marker just 31 seconds into the contest, staked McDaniel to an early 3-0 advantage. Larson scored 7:04 into the game to get Dickinson on the board before the teams traded goals over the next nearly 10 minutes, giving the Green Terror a 5-3 edge.
Connie Wuenschel (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) and Erinn Hopkins (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) tallied on back-to-back free-position goals to make it a 7-3 game with 8:25 remaining until intermission. A free-position goal from Tara Goss pulled the Red Devils within 7-4 at the intermission.
Mullen got her day – and the second half – started, finishing a Chelsea Ferruzzi (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) feed 4 minutes, 48 seconds into the stanza. Dickinson reeled off the next three tallies in a 2-minute, 6-second span – the last two off free-position attempts – to pull within 8-7.
Back-to-back free-position tallies by Meagan Mattson (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) and a Kerrie Wuenschel (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) free-position goal stretched the lead back to four with 10:20 to play.
Crellin momentarily halted the fun before Mullen scored the final three goals.
