No. 1 Salisbury Sails into NCAA Quarterfinals
SALISBURY, Md. - The top-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse program waltzed into the 2007 NCAA Division III tournament and took down visiting Widener University 16-8 here Saturday in a second round game before 664 at Sea Gull Stadium.
Salisbury (20-0) ties the school record for wins in a season (20) for the fourth year in a row and extends its home winning streak to a NCAA record 58 games. SU will host No. 7 Roanoke College on Wednesday, May 16 in the quarterfinals. The Sea Gulls demolished the Maroons 28-4 earlier in the season (March 4).
Junior Greg Titus had his second highest goal output of the season as the attackman scored six goals and tacked on an assist to lead the Gulls with seven points. Senior Eric Bishop scored three goals and two assists. Senior Matt Dasinger and junior Matt Hickman were the other multi-goal scorers as the duo scored two goals each. Junior Brett Yoder led the maroon and gold with three assists.
SU led 4-0 after the first quarter of play. Widener (13-6) then scored three of the next five goals to pull within three, 6-3, midway through the second quarter. Titus scored three of his game-high six goals in the second quarter as the Sea Gulls scored the quarter's final four goals to take a 10-3 lead in the half.
Widener was led Chris Matthews, Brian Stromko and Gavin Goane who all scored two goals each for the Pride.
SU outshot WU 45-28 and scooped up 38 groundballs. SU was 32-of-33 on clears while Widener had nine failed clears (21-of-30). The Pride held a slight advantage on faceoffs (16-of-26) and goalie Andrew Johnson made 17 saves in the loss.
The smothering SU defense caused 17 of Widener's 30 turnovers led by All-American defenseman Chris Heier who had three. Senior goalie Max Zarchin made eight saves in the win.
The game time for Wednesday's game will be determined early next week.
