No. 4 Nazareth Flies by No. 18 Geneseo to Advance

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 12, 2007) -- Senior attackman Ryan Hotaling (Onondaga HS/Syracuse, NY) scored four goals and added three assists and senior midfielder Kevin Kimball (St. Mark's/Framingham, MA, pictured) also scored four times Saturday to lift host Nazareth to a 15-5 men's lacrosse victory over Geneseo in an NCAA Division III Tournament game at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The victory enabled Nazareth to equal a school record for wins with 16 -- the Golden Flyers are 16-2 overall -- and vaulted the Golden Flyers to Wednesday's national quarterfinals against Wesleyan College of Connecticut. Wesleyan defeated Middlebury in its first-round game Saturday, 13-9. Game time will be announced Sunday.

Nazareth dominated Geneseo most of the way Saturday after rallying from an early 2-0 deficit. The Golden Flyers led 3-2 after one quarter, 7-2 at halftime and 11-5 after three quarters.

Geneseo controlled the ball for the first half of the first quarter and got goals on their first two shots of the game -- by Andrew Hanover and Colin Ireland. Hotaling sliced the lead in half with an unassisted goal for Nazareth with 7:45 left in the quarter.

Junior midfielder Aaron Civalier (Penfield HS/Rochester, NY), who finished with three goals, scored twice for Nazareth before the first quarter ended. The second goal came off an assist from Hotaling with :09 left in the quarter and the Golden Flyers never trailed thereafter.

Nazareth continued to dominate the second quarter with a 13-2 shooting advantage while scoring four more times. Kimball scored three of his goals in that stretch, the final goal coming just :05 before halftime. Jordan Hirsch (Hendrick Hudson HS/Monstrose, NY) also scored for Nazareth.

The teams exchanged goals in the third quarter with Hotaling scoring twice more for Nazareth while Civalier and Chad Amidon (Onondaga HS/Syracuse, NY) also scored. Kimball, Hotaling and Amidon added goals in the fourth quarter for Nazareth as did junior midfielder Matt Aloi (Jamesville-DeWitt HS/DeWitt, NY). Hotaling also finished with three assists for Nazareth, including two in the fourth quarter.

Nazareth had advantages in shots (38-27) and ground balls (40-27). Amidon had eight ground balls and won 10 of 20 faceoffs. Freshman defenseman Mitchel Frey (Moeller HS/Terrace Park, OH) added seven ground balls. Senior goalie Pat Mullin (Irondequoit HS/Rochester, NY) made 11 saves, while Geneseo's Tim Garback (Henninger HS/Syracuse, NY) had eight. Hanover finished with two goals for the Blue Knights, who finished 9-5 overall.
