Breslin, Weymouth Lead #3 Virginia by #11 Princeton
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- After allowing the visiting Tigers two goals in the first 90 seconds, the No. 3 Cavaliers gave their mothers a present for Mothers' Day as the 'Hoos (17-3) outscored Princeton 8-1 over the remainder of the first half and then won 13 of the 19 draws in the second half to claim the NCAA first round victory 19-10 today in Charlottesville. Kate Breslin and Blair Weymouth both had eight points to lead the Cavalier offense while Brittany Kalkstein had six draws. Princeton's Katie Lewis-Lamonica had five goals to lead the Tigers (10-7).
The Cavaliers won the opening draw but an early turnover gave the ball to Princeton, and Kristin Schwab found Alex Gangler on a fast break to stake the Tigers to the 1-0 lead. Kathleen Miller won the draw and Lewis-Lamonica rolled the crease for a 2-0 lead 27 seconds later. Marie McKenna won the ensuing draw, and things looked bad for the hosts.
But Jessy Morgan intercepted a pass just outside the top of the fan, and the Cavaliers cleared the ball upfield where Weymouth took a pass from Kalkstein from the top and scored at 25:27 to get the Cavaliers on the scoreboard. Kalkstein won the ensuing draw and got the ball to McCulloch, whose point-blank shot was saved, but it popped out in front of the cage and Kalkstein was there to bat it in the cage, tying the game in a span of 17 seconds. Lewis-Lamonica rolled the crease again for a Princeton lead of 3-2 two minutes later.
Kalkstein won the draw again, and Virginia settled the ball briefly before Weymouth drove in from the top to tie the game at 22:14. A Princeton draw was taken downfield where a shot ricocheted off the pipe and came to the restraining line, where Breslin was fouled trying to pick it up. On the restart, she took off upfield and fed the ball to a streaking Jess Wasilewski, who sprinted 70 yards, caught the ball in stride at the opposite restraining line, and fired in a shot to give Virginia the lead at 20:55.
An errant Princeton pass was picked up by Breslin, and the Cavaliers took the ball upfield where the fourth-year drew a shooting space foul. She converted the shot for a 6-4 lead. A Jen Holden caused turnover in the arc started a clear that saw Kaitlin Duff hit Breslin across the arc at the other end, and the Manhasset native scored her second goal in a row, five minutes after her first, to give UVa a 6-3 lead, forcing the Tigers to take a timeout.
Weymouth won the draw and the Cavaliers set up their attack; Duff was detained on a cut and she was awarded an 8-meter on the center hash. She converted the shot and the Cavaliers led 7-3. After a UVa turnover in their offensive fan gave the ball to Princeton, Ashley McCulloch caused a turnover while redefending and Weymouth scooped up the loose ball. Virginia reset and Duff drove in before dumping to a wide-open Breslin, who scored her third goal of the game 90 seconds after Duff's goal for an 8-3 lead. Virginia led at the break 8-3 after holding Princeton scoreless over the final 23:11 of the first period.
Princeton got on the board first in the second half as Lewis-Lamonica again drove in and scored, cutting the deficit to 8-4 one minute into the period. A Kendall McBrearty save started the next scoring sequence as Claire Bordley cleared the ball upfield and Virginia settled the ball before Weymouth took a pass from Megan O'Malley and scored at 26:33. Another McBrearty save led to a fast break that saw Weymouth lead Breslin into the arc, who in turn fed McCulloch on the doorstep. McCulloch's goal came one minute after Weymouth's and moved Virginia into double digits on the scoreboard. Bordley won the draw and got the ball Breslin, whose goal less than a minute later gave UVa three goals in 1:55 and an 11-4 lead, forcing the Tigers to take their final timeout.
