Stevens Adds Duerr, Madalon, Bielicky as Assistants

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 22, 2007) – On Wednesday, Stevens Institute of Technology Head Coach Byron Collins (Succasunna, N.J.) announced the hiring of three new coaches for the 2008 campaign. Bill Duerr (Manasquan, N.J.) and Matt Madalon (Darien, Conn.) will serve as the top two assistants, while recent alum Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) has been added as a graduate assistant coach.

"I am very pleased with the way that our coaching staff has been assembled," Collins said. "Even though we found ourselves in a position of having to replace three talented coaches, I feel that we found the right staff that will help us reach our goals in the coming years."

Stevens has been to six of the last seven NCAA Tournaments and amassed an overall record of 88-30 while producing 14 All-Americans and eight North-South Classic participants during that time. Starting in 2008, the Ducks will compete in arguably the toughest conference in Division III as they enter the Empire 8.

Duerr, who will work primarily with the Ducks' offense, spent the 2007 campaign as an assistant coach at Division I Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Prior to joining the staff at Marist, Duerr had a stellar four-year career as an attackman with the Red Foxes. From 2003-06, he amassed 138 points from 86 goals and 52 assists. He ended his career ranked eighth on the Marist all-time scoring list. Duerr was fifth overall in goals and seventh in assists as part of the Red Foxes' program.

In his freshman year at Marist, Duerr finished second on the team in scoring. He also had a streak of 10 consecutive games with at least one goal. In 2004, Duerr led the Red Foxes in assists and was second in both points and goals. Along the way, he was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first-team.

As a junior, Duerr played an integral role as Marist earned the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost in the first round to eventual national champion Johns Hopkins University. During that 2005 campaign, Duerr once again led the team in assists and finished second in both goals and points. In the process, he was named to the All-MAAC first-team and earned MAAC all-tournament honors for the first time. Duerr closed out his career with an impressive senior campaign in 2006 as he led the Red Foxes with 31 points en route to being named to the All-MAAC second-team. He also garnered all-tournament honors for a second straight season.

Madalon, who will work primarily with the Ducks' defense and goalkeepers, began his collegiate lacrosse career at Division I Hofstra University. After sitting out the 2002 campaign, Madalon played for the Pride in 2003 before transferring to Roanoke College in Virginia for his final three seasons.

While at Roanoke, Madalon helped lead the Maroons to a pair of appearances in the national semifinals. During his junior season in 2005, Madalon was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Year and garnered first-team all-conference honors. He was also selected as a second-team All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association after leading Roanoke to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, where the Maroons lost to eventual national champion Salisbury University.

Madalon continued his fine play in 2006 as he was named a second-team All-American once again. He also earned first-team All-ODAC accolades. As captain of the Maroons, Madalon guided Roanoke to the ODAC title and a return trip to the national semifinals.

After graduating from Roanoke, Madalon taught history at an Air Force base in Aviano, Italy for six months before returning to the United States to serve as an assistant lacrosse coach at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia for the 2007 season. He was acquired in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Lacrosse supplemental draft by the San Francisco Dragons. He recently competed in his first season of professional lacrosse.
