LANCASTER, Pa. – Brooke Young and Mia Gambino are two new additions to the women's lacrosse coaching staff for the 2008 season. As an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Young was a four-year scholarship athlete for the nationally-ranked Tar Heels. In 2002, she was a starter for the ACC championship team that went on to the NCAA Final Four. Young was also invited to try out for the United States National Development Squad.
Professionally, Young spent a year and a half as the Assistant Director of the Downingtown Area Recreation Consortium and was a volunteer coaching for the Triangle Area Lacrosse league from 2000-03. She has also been a counselor for prestigious camps, including Maryland. Loyola, Penn State and North Carolina. Young graduated in May 2004 with a bachelor of arts degree in Communication Studies from North Carolina. She resides in Downingtown, Pa.
Gambino and head coach Anne Phillips have had the chance to win a championship together just not at F&M. She played and was captain for Phillips' CLC Coventry Club team that went on to win the 2000 Keystone State Games gold medal and silver medal in 2001. They reunite with hopes to repeat as champions again.
"My experience with coach Phllips on her club team inspired me to want to be a coach," said Gambino. "She pushed me in the right direction and now I get the opportunity to continue to be a champion with her on the sideline."
Gambino graduate from Pottsgrove High School in 2002, where she was a first-team All-Conference PAC-10 defender and named first-team All-Area as a senior. She went on to play at Old Dominion for a year, before transferring to Millersville. As a Marauder, Gambino was a captain for two seasons and was named to the 2006 IWLAC All-Region team. As a junior and senior, she was an All-PSAC first-team choice and a Division III Academic All-American. In 2007, she was chosen to represent the USA for the American International Sports Team in Prague, Czech Republic, earning MVP of the Prague Cup.
Gambino graduated in May 2007 with a degree in psychology and minor in coaching, and is currently a graduate student at Millersville, majoring in sports management.
