No. 20 Richmond Buries Longwood in Season Opener
RICHMOND, Va. -- Allison Furstenburg's 10 points catapulted the No. 20 Spiders over Longwood, 21-11, in Richmond's first game of the 2008 season. Furstenburg scored six points and added four assists to lead the Spiders. Lexie Marrocco added seven points of her own with five goals and two assists while Mandy Friend contributed six points consisting of four goals and two assists. Dee Warehime and Kesley Dean each recorded a hat trick for the Lancers.
The Spiders' attack ruled the field in No. 20 Richmond's first victory of the 2008 season. Six different players contributed goals for the Spiders. Along with Furstenburg, Friend and Marrocco, freshman Jules Nicola recorded her own hat trick, Katy Smullen added two goals and freshman Anne Ryan added one goal.
Senior Claire Cunniff recorded two assists finding Mandy Friend with just six seconds to go in the first half of play. Cunniff turned around in the second half to find Lexie Marrocco with a helper on her third goal of the game.
There are 11 newcomers in this year's roster. Two of those 11 freshmen accounted for six points out of Richmond's 21 in the win over Longwood. Anne Ryan finished the game with a goal and two assists while classmate Jules Nicola added three goals, recording her first career hat trick.
Next up for the Spiders is No. 3 Duke, which comes to Richmond next Friday, February 22 for a 3:00 p.m. ET game at First Market Stadium.

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University dropped its season opening game in women's lacrosse, falling 21-11 to No. 20 Richmond at First Market Stadium in Richmond on February 15. The Lancers fall to 0-1 on the season, while Richmond improves to 1-0. Longwood returns to action on Wednesday, February 20 when they play host to William & Mary at 4 p.m. at the Lancer Athletics Complex.
Dee Warhime/Westminster, Md. (Westminster) and Kelsey Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) each scored three points for the Lancers. Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine's) added two points, scoring one goal and assisting on Michelle Owen's/Finksburg, Md. (Mount de Sales Academy) goal.
The Spiders attacked ruled the field in Richmond's victory, keeping Longwood off balance throughout the match. The Lancers had seven different players contribute for goals.
There are nine newcomers in this year's Lancer roster. Farmer led the way for the freshmen, not only recording the hat trick, but also taking four shots on goal.
