Colgate Drops Season Opener, 18-14, to Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (2/16/08) - Colgate senior tri-captain Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and sophomore Brie Moran (Little Silver, N.J.) both scored three goal, but their efforts weren't enough as the Raider women's lacrosse team lost its season-opener, 18-14, to Stony Brook on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Three other Raiders, senior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.), and juniors Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.) and Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.), contributed two goals, and junior Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) made six saves in the game.

The Seawolves were paced by Kaitlin Leggio, who netted six goals and added two assists. Melissa Cook recorded three goals and two helpers, while Jenna Celano and Amy Hallion posted two goals each. Goalie Jamie Carlson earned the win after making seven saves.

Van der Meulen netted the first goal of the season 35 seconds into the game, and Pittard made it 2-1 at the 4:38 mark, but the Seawolves scored six of the next seven goals to go up 7-3 with just over four minutes to play in the first half. However, Colgate had the momentum going into halftime as it potted three of the last four goals of the period to set the score at 8-6 at the break.

The Raiders carried over their success into the second half by notching the first goal of the frame to make it a one-goal game. However, Stony Brook scored the next three goals and never let Colgate get closer than two the rest of the way. The Raiders finished by scoring four of the last five goals of the game.

The Seawolves earned the edge in shots, 35-31, and draw controls, 18-16, but Colgate won the groundball war, 26-24.

Colgate is back in action on Friday, Feb. 22, when it visits Binghamton for a game that begins at 4:00 p.m.
