No. 8 North Carolina Stops No. 16 Denver to Go 2-0
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team got five goals from freshman Corey Donohoe and four apiece from Julia Ryan and Chelsea Parks as it defeated Denver, 15-9, on Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field. The win improved the Tar Heels to 2-0 this season. Denver fell to 0-2.
Ryan finished with four goals and two assists for six total points in the game. Donohoe's five goals put her second among Tar Heels in scoring on the day, followed by Parks (four goals), Megan Bosica (two assists), Jenn Russell (one goal) and Mia Hurrin (one goal). Amber Falcone, Kelly Taylor and Kristen Taylor all tallied one assist for UNC.
Donohoe, who had three goals on Friday night against Loyola, has scored eight times in her first two collegiate games. Parks scored four times on Friday and also has eight goals so far in 2008, her first season as a starter.
Megan Carver led Denver with four goals, while Karen Morton added three. Steph Coyne had a goal and two assists for DU.
Parks scored Carolina's first two goals in the first six minutes but Coyne and Morton's goals for DU tied the score at 2-2 at the 18:41 mark of the first half. Ryan and Russell scored back-to-back goals for the Tar Heels to make it 4-2 less than five minutes later. Carver's first goal made it 4-3 UNC at the 10:59 mark of the first half.
Donohoe scored twice in a row to make the tally 6-3 UNC before a free position goal by Morton made it 6-4 at the break.
Donohoe scored again at the 28:31 mark of the second half. The teams traded goals until the Tar Heels scored four consecutive goals, including one by the freshman Hurrin, to break things open at 13-6.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Albany.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) scored four goals, but the No. 16 University of Denver women's lacrosse team fell to No. 8 North Carolina, 15-9. Junior Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) had her second straight hat trick and junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a goal and two assists.
After UNC scored the first goal, Coyne found the back of the net on a feed from sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) with 24:19 left, but 10 seconds later the Tarheels responded. Morton tied the game again, but Carolina went on a 4-1 run, broken up only by a Carver goal from senior Megan Tyrie (Littleton, Colo.). Morton cut the deficit to two on a free position shot with six minutes remaining, sending Denver to the break trailing 6-4.
The Tarheels opened the second half on a 3-1 run in the first seven minutes, again with Carver scoring the lone DU goal in the stretch. Freshman Tulley Stapp (Denver, Colo.) scored her first collegiate goal off a free position shot with 22:53 remaining in the contest, but UNC bounced back again by scoring four straight goals. Morton snapped the streak on a free position shot, but the teams traded goals down the stretch, as North Carolina sealed the victory.
