UMass Opens Season with Victory over Holy Cross
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's lacrosse team started the 2008 season on a high note on Tuesday afternoon with a 9-5 win over Holy Cross at McGuirk Stadium. Jackie Lyons, Kaytlin McCormick and Julie Pasquantonio each scored two goals to lead the Minutewomen. McCormick added two assists in her first game back from redshirting the 2007 season. UMass dominated the game with a 32-to-12 shot advantage and played well defensively causing 28 turnovers. The Minutewomen return to action on Friday when No. 3 Maryland visits McGuirk Stadium.
The game was the season opener for both teams as UMass goes to 1-0 on the season and Holy Cross, defending Patriot League Champions, starts the year at 0-1.
Merritt Cosgrove started the scoring nearly 13 minutes into the game when she took a feed from Pasquantonio who rolled the backside of the crease. The Minutewomen added goals from Kathleen Typadis and Lyons to take a 3-0 lead with 12:29 remaining in the first half.
Holy Cross' Meg O'Leary answered with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 3-2 with 6:37 before the half.
Pasquantonio scored with just eight seconds remaining in the first half to give UMass a 4-2 lead at the intermission.
Three minutes into the second half, Pasquantonio picked up where she left off in the first half with her second goal of the game followed by a McCormick goal a minute later for the 6-2 lead.
Following a Holy Cross goal, McCormick and Lyons each scored goals separated by just nine seconds to go up 8-3 with 12:49 to play.
Kristine Corkum scored for Holy Cross to again cut into the lead, but the Minutewomen held several long possessions to run down time resulting in a Melynda Zwick goal with 5:53 left in the game.
Cashel Scanlon scored her second goal of the game with 3:18 to go, but UMass ran out the remainder of the clock to take the win.

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Cashel Scanlon (Bethesda, Md.) scored two goals and dished out two assists for four points, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Massachusetts, 9-5, this afternoon in non-conference action at Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium in the season-opener for both teams. With the loss, the Crusaders start the season 0-1, while the Minutewomen start the season 1-0.
Freshman Meg O'Leary (Longmeadow, Mass.) had an impressive debut as she scored two goals and had one assist for three points, while senior Kristine Corkum (Ipswich, Mass.) scored one goal and sophomore Megan Fenton (Bridgewater, N.J.) added one assist.
UMass was led by Kaytlin McCormick's two goals and two assists for four points, while Julie Pasquantonio had two goals and one assist for three points.
The Minutewomen scored the first three goals of the game with goals by Merritt Cosgrove, Kathleen Typadis and Jackie Lyons. The Crusaders then scored two straight goals to make it a 3-2 game when O'Leary netted her first two collegiate goals. Her first goal was assisted by Scanlon and her second goal was assisted by Fenton. With eight seconds remaining in the first half, Pasquantonio scored a goal to give the Minutewomen a 4-2 lead into halftime.
UMass started the second half with goals by Pasquantonio and McCormick to increase its lead to 6-2. With 22:12 left on the clock, Scanlon made it a 6-3 game when she scored on a free position shot, while McCormick then gave UMass back its four-goal lead with her second goal of the game. After Lyons netted her second goal of the contest to increase the UMass lead to 8-3, Corkum scored with 11:52 left in the second half for an 8-4 score. Scanlon earned her second assist of the game on the goal. After Melynda Zwick scored for UMass, Scanlon netted the last goal of the game with 3:18 on the clock for the 9-5 final score. The goal was her second of the game, while O'Leary earned an assist.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Amy Martin (Bloomfield, Mich.) made 13 saves in her collegiate debut, while Krissy Anderson stopped two shots.
The Crusaders return to action on Sunday, February 24, when they travel to Cambridge, Mass., to meet Harvard at 1:00 p.m.
