Sewanee Falls to No. 12 W&L in Inaugural Game

SEWANEE - Sewanee kicked off its inaugural varsity women's lacrosse season at home Tuesday night against nationally-ranked Washington & Lee. The Generals have won the ODAC for five years straight. Sewanee fell to the visiting DIII powerhouse 18-3 after trailing 12-2 at the half.

Carly Grimm (South Salem, N.Y.) led Sewanee's effort, scoring all three Tiger goals. She also had three draw controls on the night. Peachtree City, Georgia native Catherine Sanders logged two assists, caused three turnovers and gained one draw control for Sewanee. The Tigers had five good clears, compared to 10 for the Generals. W&L had four players with three goals apiece, including Kelsi Robinson, who also had an assist and gained four draw controls.

In goal, Katie Gojkovich (Westport, Conn.) had six saves. Washington and Lee's Sarah Tilbor had four saves in the goal.

Sewanee (0-1) will host Ferrum and Fontbonne March 7-9. W&L (1-0) will play at St. Mary's on February 23.

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Nine players scored a goal as the 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team opened its 2008 season with an 18-3 victory over Sewanee on Tuesday evening.

Five different Generals found the back of the net in the opening 14:49 of the game before Sewanee netted its first goal, one of three on the day scored by Carly Grimm. The Blue and White subsequently out-scored the Tigers 7-1 for a 12-2 advantage at the half in cruising to the 15-goal victory.

Washington and Lee (1-0) was led by sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who notched three goals and two assists. Junior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) tallied three goals and one assist apiece, while freshman midfielder Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) totaled three goals. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played all 60:00 in goal and stopped four shots.

Grimm led the Tigers (0-1) with her three goals, while Catherine Sanders chipped in a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Katie Gojkovich posted six saves for Sewanee.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to St. Mary's of Maryland for a 1:00 pm contest.
