St. Mary's Posts Win over York in Season Opener

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team opened up the 2008 campaign on the right track with a 16-8 Capital Athletic Conference victory over York (Pa.) College behind four goals from freshman Aileen McCausland (Phoenix, Md./Hereford).

Seniors Alison Napolitano (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and Jaclyn VanLuit (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) gave York (0-1, 0-1 CAC) an early 2-1 lead at 25:20 with a pair of unassisted goals.

St. Mary's (1-0, 1-0 CAC) quickly responded with seven unanswered goals as the Seahawks received three from McCausland and two from sophomore attacker Nora Fallon-Oben (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) to claim an 8-2 at 9:02.

Each team netted to more goals to make the halftime score 10-4 in favor of St. Mary's.

McCausland started the second half scoring with her fourth of the day followed by junior midfielder Megan Bell (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) notching one for York to keep it at a six-goal differential. Junior midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) tallied a pair in 10 seconds to give the Seahawks an eight-goal lead with 18:45 remaining.

Carrier ended the afternoon with a hat trick, while Fallon-Oben, junior attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney), and sophomore attacker Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) each had two goals apiece in the win.

Napolitano registered a hat trick for the Spartans, while Bell finished with a pair and five draw controls.

Sophomore defender Karisa Carroll (Long Island, N.Y./Ward Melville) led the Seahawks with three ground balls and three draw controls, while freshman midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) had three draw controls and a pair of ground balls.

St. Mary's controlled the draw controls, 15-11, as well as the loose ball war, 15-8. The Seahawks also outshot York, 33-23

Freshman goalie Ella Schoming (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) earned her first collegiate win with 10 stops, while junior Anne Feustle (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) recorded 11 saves in the loss for York.

The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday when St. Mary's entertains No. 12 Washington & Lee University in non-conference action at 1:00 in Seahawk Stadium. York will be back in action on Friday when the Spartans travel to Elizabethtown College for a non-conference contest at 4:00.
