Combs' Overtime Goal Gives CC Exhibition Victory
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Senior midfielder Hunter Combs scored 1:23 into overtime to give the Colorado College men's lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over the University of Colorado club team on Wednesday at Washburn Field.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 14 in the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association, tied the game with just under two remaining in the game on a goal by Brian Lemery. CU started overtime with a man advantage after CC's Chris Kolodey was called for slashing at the end of regulation.
The Tigers forced a turnover just as the penalty expired to set up Combs' game winner from 15 yards out.
James Blackburn gave the Buffs a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 4:41 into the first period, but CC answered with four consecutive goals, the last of which by Brendan Gangle gave the Tigers a three-goal advantage with 5:37 remaining in the first half.
Colorado cut the deficit to 4-2 when Blackburn scored with under a second remaining.
The Tigers regained their three-goal advantage when Kyle Wildnauer-Haigney scored the second of his two goals 3:33 into the second half and led 6-3 when Joe Boyle scored a man-up goal with just 4:07 left in the game.
The Buffs scored three times in a span of 3:40 to force overtime, including goals by Jack Kruszewski and Lemery inside the final minute.
CC used all three of its freshman goalkeepers in the game. Max Pluss started the game and made three saves before leaving the game with a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes. Brendan Haas played the second period, while Scott McArthur made one save in 31:23 in the second half.
Kevin Moriarty made 11 saves for the Buffs, including five in the third period. Chris Hoffmeister allowed one goal in 4:26 during the third period while Moriarty was off the field with an injury.
Colorado College will play a second exhibition game this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when the Tigers play host to second-ranked Colorado State University at Washburn Field.
