Colorado College 16, Regis University 8

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior attacker Mallory Newton scored five goals to lead the Colorado College women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 victory over Regis University in the season opener for both teams on Thursday afternoon at CC's Stewart Field.

Sophomore attacker Marisa McGrann posted career highs with four assists and six points as the Tigers won its first game for the fifth consecutive year. Junior Midfielder Ali Zarlengo had two goals and an assist, while sophomore midfielder Kristin Rider and sophomore attacker Ginny Rider each had a pair of goals.

Senior attacker Amanda Ponzer led the Randers with two goals and assist, while senior midfielder Lillian Yanni added a pair of goals.

Newton scored four of her goals in the first half to help CC jump out to a 7-2 lead. After Regis scored twice in a span of 25 seconds to tie the game at 2-2, the Tigers scored five in a row to take control of the game. The Rangers cut the deficit to three goals with 7:08 remaining in the half, but CC scored the next three en route to a 10-5 halftime lead.

Ponzer's second goal 7:56 into the second half trimmed CC's advantage to 10-6, but the Tigers outscored Regis 7-2 during the final 18:18 to improve to 10-0 lifetime against the Rangers.

Junior Jess Van Doren made seven saves to earn the victory in goal. Brittany Farnick had 10 saves for Regis. CC had a 26-15 advantage in shots on goal.

Kristin Rider had a game-high five goals for Colorado College, while freshman defender Clair Draudt had a team-high three caused turnovers.

CC will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to the Colorado State University club team in an exhibition game at 11:00 a.m.
