No. 16 Denver Storms Past Stony Brook
DENVER – Junior Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) scored six goals and had an assist, as the University of Denver women's lacrosse team beat Stony Brook 15-5 in the home opener at Barton Stadium on Friday evening. Junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) added five goals and three assists, tying her career high with eight points, which is also ties the sixth highest single-game mark in DU history.
"This was a good win against a good team," head coach Liza Kelly said. "Tonight's win gives us confidence that we are capable of beating any team."
The Pioneers (1-2) jumped out early when junior Megan Carver (Baltimore, Md.) buried a pass from Coyne just 30 seconds into the game. Stony Brook (1-1) responded five minutes later with a goal by Samantha Djaha, but Denver scored four unanswered goals – three by Coyne and one by Morton – over a 10-minute stretch before Djaha scored again. Morton scored three more goals in the half, while the Seawolves could muster only one, sending DU to halftime with an 8-3 lead.
The Seawolves opened the second half on a 2-1 run with sophomore Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) getting the DU goal, but Denver sealed the game by scoring the final six goals, including two more for Flury to get the hat trick. The Pioneers play their second of seven-consecutive games at Barton Lacrosse Stadium against Duquesne on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. MT.

Denver, Colo. (February 22, 2008) – Denver's Karen Morton and Steph Coyne combined for 11 goals as the Pioneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and defeated the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 15-5 at Peter Barton Stadium on Friday evening. Stony Brook drops to 1-1 while Denver is 1-2.
After Megan Carver scored the first goal of the game, freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.) evened the score when she took a pass from senior Elizabeth Montreuil (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and beat Pioneers goalie Becky Childs. Coyne (3) and Morton combined to score the next four goals for Denver as it took a 5-1 lead. Djaha made the score 5-2 after converting a free-position shot before Morton answered with two more goals.
Junior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored the Seawolves next two goals to get them within 9-5. Denver scored the final six goals of the contest. Montreuil had two assists for Stony Brook and senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) added her second goal of the season. Freshman Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made 18 saves in goal for Stony Brook.
Stony Brook is back in action when it takes on the Duquesne Dukes on Sunday morning at Peter Barton Stadium. First draw control is scheduled for 12:00 pm ET.
