No. 6 Maryland Wins Season Opener at Massachusetts

AMHERST, Mass. - Kelly Kasper scored six goals and three other Terrapins had hat tricks on the day as No. 3 Maryland defeated the UMass women's lacrosse team 18-7 on Saturday afternoon in McGuirk Stadium. Kaytlin McCormick led the Minutewomen with three goals. Maryland used a strong offensive performance and tough defense to pick up the win outshooting UMass 40-to-15 for the game. UMass falls to 1-1 on the season and will face No. 18 Boston University on Wednesday at McGuirk Stadium.

Maryland (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Merrit Cosgrove scored her first goal of the season to put UMass on the board almost 12 minutes into the first half.

The Terps then scored three straight goals until Kathleen Typadis scored for UMass to make the scored 5-2 with just under seven minutes remaining in the first half. Maryland took a 7-2 lead with back-to-back goals before the first half came to a close.

The Terps quickly tacked on another goal to go up 8-2 just 21 seconds into the second half. After Maryland took a 10-3 lead with 25:29 remaining in the game, the two teams traded goals on the next four scoring series.

UMass trailed by six, 13-7, on McCormick's third goal of the game, but Maryland scored five unanswered to close out the win.

Kasper led all scorers with six goals and an assist for seven points. Dana Dobbie had three goals and two assists, while Caitlyn McFadden added four goals and Lauren Cohen scored three.

McCormick's three goals led UMass offensively. Typadis, Julie Pasquantonio, Jeannette Villapiano, and Cosgrove each scored a goal in the loss. Typadis extended her scoring streak to 43 consecutive games and now needs 38 goals to set the UMass career record.

Krissy Anderson started in goal for UMass making 12 saves, while Allie Buote started for Maryland making four saves in the win.

AMHERST, Mass. Senior Kelly Kasper scored a career high six goals as the No. 6 Maryland womens lacrosse team beat Massachusetts, 18-7, in the Terrapins season opener on February 23 at McGuirk Stadium. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden also recorded career highs in goals and points with four and five, respectively.

The Terps hounded UMass all day and forced 29 UMass turnovers while allowing the Minutewomen to convert just 10 of 18 clear opportunities. Maryland also owned a 40-15 shot advantage as a bulk of the possession was spent on the Terps attack.

Seniors Lauren Cohen and Dana Dobbie also recorded hat tricks on the day. Dobbie added two assists while Cohen tallied one. Senior Katie Princiotto dished out two assists and classmate Casey Magor recorded a goal and an assist.

Maryland jumped out quick with a goal in the first 1:10 of the game. Following a Massachusetts turnover, senior Lauren Cohen fed classmate Dana Dobbie from behind the net for the first goal of the game. UMass won the ensuing draw but the Terps defense held strong, keeping the Minutewomen offense at bay for over three minutes.

McFadden earned a free position with 24:00 on the clock but hit the pipe. Marylands pressure in the midfield forced numerous UMass turnovers as the Minutewomen failed to clear the ball four consecutive times.

When UMass finally did clear, it turned into a fast break as Haley Smith connected with Merritt Cosgrove who put the ball in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Maryland added three-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 7:23 remaining in the half. Senior Casey Magor scored off a pass from McFadden at the 12:45 mark and then Kasper scored unassisted a little over a minute later, using a clever side shot to surprise the goalie. Kasper then connected again with the help of a pass from Princiotto to push the lead to 5-1.
