No. 11 Washington College Edges Wesley in Opener
DOVER, DE -- Senior midfielder Nick Gregory (Riva, MD/South River) scored two goals and assisted on two others as 11th-ranked Washington College held off host Wesley College, 8-7, in the men's lacrosse season opener for both teams this afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium.
The Shoremen scored the first two goals of the game as senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored off a feed from senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) with 12:04 left in the first quarter and senior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) fired in a goal 55 seconds later. The Wolverines got on the board when Nick Pisacano scored off an assist from Eric Crumbock with 29 seconds left in the quarter to make it 2-1.
The Wolverines scored the first two goals of the second quarter to to take a 3-2 lead. Dan Skeels tied the score with an extra-man goal off an assist from Brad Smith with 5:40 left in the quarter and Crumbock scored an extra-man goal off an assist from Skeels with 1:14 left. Washington evened the scored four seconds before halftime on an extra-man goal by junior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) off a feed from Gregory.
The Shoremen grabbed the lead when Gregory scored 26 seconds into the third quarter. Wesley answered with 13:18 left in the third when Smith scored off a Joe Trezza feed, but Washington responded at the 7:20 mark as Kirby scored off an assist from Gregory The Wolverines again knotted the score, however, as Luke Moeller scored an extra-man goal off a feed from Pisacano with 4:45 to go in the period to make it 5-5.
The Shoremen scored the next two goals to take their first two-goal lead since the 2-0 advantage in the first quarter. Junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) finished off the third-quarter scoring with a goal off a Read assist at 2:01 to give Washington a 6-5 advantage and Gregory scored an extra-man goal off a Kielek feed 34 seconds into the the fourth quarter to make it 7-5.
Wesley closed the gap to 7-6 41 seconds later when Skeels found Rob King for a goal with 13:45 on the clock, but Washington pulled in front, 8-6, when Kirby scored off an assist from Read with 7:36 left. Moeller trimmed the margin to 8-7 with an extra-man goal off an assist from Pisacano with 5:23 left, but the Wolverines could not tie the score in the remaining minutes.
Kirby (two goals, one assist), Read (one goal, two assists), and Kielek joined Gregory as the Shoremen's multiple-point getters in the game. Moeller netted two goals for Wesley, while Pisacano and Skeels each had one goal and two assists and Smith and Crumbock each had a goal and an assist.
Junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 12 saves for the Shoremen in the win, while Jim McCleaft made 15 saves for Wesley. Washington enjoyed a 40-31 advantage in shots and a 29-26 edge in ground balls in the game.
The Shoremen open their home schedule tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. game against Kean.
