No. 19 Loyola Spoils No. 13 Towson's Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore attackman Cooper MacDonnell (Darien H.S./Darien, Conn.) scored a career-high four goals, including a pair of markers during a decisive six-goal run, to lead 18th-ranked Loyola College (1-1) to a 13-8 non-conference victory over 13th-ranked Towson University (0-1) in the Tigers' home opener at Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win snapped the Greyhounds' three-game losing streak against Towson and narrowed the Tigers' lead in the all-time series to 27-23.

Led by two goals from MacDonnell, the Greyhounds jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. After the teams traded goals, the Tigers went on a 4-0 run to take a 5-4 advantage with 4:30 remaining in the first half. Junior attackman Bill McCutcheon (Chatham H.S./Chatham, N.J.) scored the first two goals of his college career and also had an assist during the run.

With 3:17 remaining in the first half, sophomore attackman Collin Finnerty (Chaminade H.S./Garden City, N.Y.) ignited a six-goal run by the Greyhounds, scoring his second goal of the season off an assist from senior attackman Shane Koppens (Shenendehowa H.S./Clifton Park, N.Y.). MacDonnell added a pair of goals during the rally, includuing a shorthanded marker with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter.

Senior attackman Jonathan Engelke (Farmingdale H.S./Massapequa, N.Y.) ended the Greyhounds' run by converting a feed from senior midfielder Matt Latonick (Archbishop Spalding H.S./Severna Park, Md.) with 8:36 remaining in the third period, cutting the Loyola edge to 10-6. With 25 seconds remaining in the stanza, freshman attackman Tim Stratton (Manheim Township H.S./Lititz, Pa.) tallied his second goal of the game off a McCutcheon assist, but the Greyhounds scored three of the final four goals to secure the victory.

MacDonnell led the Greyhounds with his four-goal effort while Koppens added two goals and three assists. Freshman goalkeeper Jake Hagelin (Boy's Latin H.S./Havre de Grace, Md.) made ten saves in the win for Loyola.

McCutcheon scored three goals and added two assists to lead the Tigers in a losing effort while Engelke and Stratton each added a pair of markers. Making the first start of his college career, senior goalkeeper Billy Sadtler (Albemarle H.S./Charlottesville, Va.) made three saves in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Matt Antol (Loyola Blakefield H.S./Baldwin, Md.) played during the second half and made five saves.
