Providence Drops Opener to Fairfield iin Overtime
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's lacrosse team dropped a, 7-6, overtime decision to Fairfield in the 2008 season opener on February 23 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
After holding a 4-3 advantage at halftime, the Friars gave up two, unanswered goals in the third quarter and trailed 5-4 going into the fourth quarter.
Senior Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) tied the game, 5-5, at the 13:28 mark on an unassisted tally. It marked his second goal of the afternoon. The Friars then took a 6-5 lead as senior Colin Reposa (East Falmouth, Mass.) netted his first goal of the year with 7:14 remaining in the game. Reposa's goal was assisted by sophomore Colin Tigh (Garden City, N.Y.).
Providence maintained the one-goal lead until Fairfield's Dan Boudreau notched the equalizer with 51 seconds remaining in regulation. Boudreau's goal was assisted by Brian Stanton, and set up the Stag's game-winner in overtime by Doug Kuring with 2:02 left in the four-minute extra session.
Junior goalkeeper Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) played all 61:58 minutes between the pipes and registered 10 saves. Joe Marra took the win in 59:14 minutes of action on five saves. Fairfield held the advantage in shots (37-19) and groundballs (38-27). Neither team was able to capitalize during extra-man opportunities. Fairfield was 0-4 with a man-advantage, while Providence was 0-3.
Providence (0-1) returns to action on Tuesday, February 26 against Air Force. The game will be played in Colorado Springs, Colo. and is scheduled to face-off at 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).
