Taylor, Lathroum Lead Tigers Over Mount St. Mary's
TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore midfielder Steph Taylor (Cocalico H.S./Denver, Pa.) and freshman midfielder Ali Lathroum (Stephen Decatur H.S./Bishopville, Md.) combined to score seven goals with two assists as Towson University (1-0) won its season opener for the sixth straight year with a 17-6 victory over Mount St. Mary's University (0-2) at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was the first meeting between the Tigers and the Mountaineers since the 2002 season. Towson leads the all-time series by a 4-0 margin.
After junior midfielder Hillary Fratzke (Queen Anne's County H.S./Centreville, Md.) gave the Tigers a quick 1-0 lead just 31 seconds into the game, junior midfielder Katelyn Catanese (St. Anthony's H.S./Huntington, N.Y.) and junior attacker Breana Waraksa (Strath Haven H.S./Media, Pa.) scored back-to-back to give Mount St. Mary's a 2-1 advantage with 21:04 remaining.
However, the Tigers responded by scoring six straight goals, including a pair from Taylor, for a 7-2 advantage with 13:49 left. Lathroum scored the first goal of her college career during the rally, converting a Fratzke pass with 14:32 remaining in the period.
Catanese and freshman attacker Kelly Taylor (Bel Air H.S./Bel Air, Md.) ended the Tigers' run with consecutive goals to narrow the margin to 7-4 before the Tigers ended the half with three unanswered goals for a 10-4 lead at the intermission. Taylor scored her third goal of the game during the run while sophomore Jacie Kendall (Souderton H.S./Harleysville, Pa.) added the first goal of her college career.
Less than two minutes into the second half, sophomore attacker Ashley Johnson (Arvada West H.S./Arvada, Colo.) scored off a Waraksa feed to cut The Mount's deficit to 10-5, but the Tigers scored seven straight goals to extend their lead to 17-5 with 11:30 remaining. Lathroum and senior attacker Ali Alati (Montclair Kimberley Academy/Glen Ridge, N.J.) each scored twice during the run.
Catanese added her third goal of the game off a feed from junior midfielder Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall H.S./Perry Hall, Md.) with 1:34 left. Taylor scored a career-high four goals and added an assist while Lathroum tallied three goals with an assist in the first game of her college career. Alati added the first hat trick of her college career with a three-goal effort. Catanese led the Mountaineers in the loss with three goals.

After Lathroum then found the twine off a Fratzke helper 16 seconds later, Brit Woodfield capped the surge with an unassisted tally at 16:11.
