#16 Mary Washington Opens with Win Over Villa Julie

Senior attacker Caitlin Erickson had two goals and five assists, and senior midfielder Amie Bruce scored four goals to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 win over Villa Julie in a Capital Athletic Conference battle in both teams' openers on Saturday at the Battleground. Senior midfielder Sarah Finney added five points for the Eagles.

UMW led, 7-4, at halftime, thanks in part to three Bruce goals and two tallies in the final 23 seconds of the half. The Eagles outscored the Mustangs, 8-4, in the second half. Freshman Katie Wallis scored three goals in her collegiate debut, and Emily Talbot added two goals and two assists for UMW. Villa Julie was led by Jamie Jones' three goals and one assist.

Senior goalkeeper Meredith Deitrick had 10 saves and junior Helena Polites had three stops for the Eagles, while Villa Julie goalkeeper Kaitlin Brzozowski had 12 saves and Sarah DeFerrari had three saves.

The Eagles outshot the Mustangs, 38-24. UMW will host fourth ranked Gettysburg College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in an early season meeting of nationally-ranked teams.
