No. 6 Maryland Cruises Past Boston College
Waltham, Mass. - Boston College lost its first game of the season to No. 6 Maryland, 23-10, at Bentley College on Sunday afternoon. Nine Eagles helped with the scoring by registering points on the day. Junior Lauren Fitzpatrick scored a hat trick and sophomore Lauren Costello recorded four points on a goal and three assists in the loss. Terrapins Dana Dobbin and Lauren Cohen each netted five goals in the as Maryland improves to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the ACC.
The Terps got off to an early start, scoring the first six goals of the game in nine minutes. The Eagles came firing back, as Fitzpatrick scored an unassisted goal at 16:18 for her first of the 2008 campaign. Junior captain Jenna McCabe notched BC's second goal less than a minute later off Costello's assist.
McCabe netted another score at the 8:06 mark before she was whistled for her second yellow card and had to leave the game. Freshman Jill Rekart recorded her first collegiate point on the assist. Costello and junior Maura Mahoney recorded two more goals for the Eagles before time expired in the first half. Mahoney's goal came nine second before the horn sounded.
At the end of the first half, Maryland led, 15-5, and outshot the Eagles, 27-15.
The Eagles scored five goals on seven shots in the second half. While the Terps got out to another quick start by scoring the first three goals of the stanza, the Eagles nailed five of the last 10 goals of the game.
Junior Rachel Tinquist and Mahoney both scored on free position shots, while freshman Kate Horsman recorded her first collegiate point on the assist of Fitzpatrick's third goal. Freshman Kristen Horsman nailed her first collegiate goal as time expired on a pass from Costello.
Junior goaltender Katie Monaghan recorded 11 saves in her 60:00 minutes. The Eagles picked up 13 ground balls while the Terps managed to gather 14. Maryland outshot BC, 40-22. Costello lead the team with four draw controls and six Eagles caused Maryland turnovers.
The Eagles travel to California to take on St. Mary's College on Sunday, March 2 at 1:00 p.m. PST.

Senior Kelly Kasper established a new career high with six assists and tied her personal best with nine points to lead No. 6 Maryland to a 23-10 victory against Boston College on February 24. Her performance comes on the heels of yesterdays six-goal showing at UMass which was also a career high.
Senior Lauren Cohen chipped in with five goals and an assist while classmate Dana Dobbie also had five goals to go along with five draw controls. Sophomore Caitlyn McFadden had two goals and an assist while senior Allie Buote was credited with seven saves in the cage, including six in the first half. As a team, Maryland fired off 40 shots for the second-straight game.
The Terrapins started by scoring the first six goals of the game in the first nine minutes. Kasper had a hand in the Terps first four goals with three assists and a score of her own. Buote and the Maryland defense held the Eagles scoreless for the first 13:42 of the game with Buote making three point-blank saves in that stretch.
Lauren Fitzpatrick finally ended the Maryland scoring run with her unassisted goal at the 16:18 mark in the first half and then Jenna McCabe scored on a pass from Lauren Costello to cut the deficit to 6-2 midway through the first half.
Maryland put five more unanswered goals in the back of the net to push its lead to 11-2. The Terps used five different scorers in that span, including freshman Laura Merrifields first goal in red and black. Maryland would end up pushing its lead to 10 goals, 15-5, before the halftime break.
