Harvard Thrashes Holy Cross to Start Its Season

Cambridge, Mass. – Eight women's lacrosse players scored for Harvard in 19-2 win over Holy Cross Sunday afternoon at Jordan Field. Freshman Jess Halpern led all players with four goals and an assist. She was one of seven players to score multiple goals in the winning effort.

Harvard begins the season 1-0, while Holy Cross falls to 0-2. The 19 Crimson goals were the most scored by a Harvard team since the Crimson scored 24 in a win over New Hampshire in 1996. It was also the largest margin of victory since a 20 goal victory (24-4) over Boston College in 1994.

"It was a good win for us," head coach Lisa Miller said after her first game at the helm of the Crimson. "The kids prepared well and played consistent. We had a few lapses in the game that I hope we can fix before our next time out. Overall, I am very pleased with their effort."

Sophomore Sara Flood had five points in the game, scoring three goals and assisting on two others. Junior Kaitlin Martin (one goal, three assists) and senior co-captain Lauren Bobzin (2 goals, 2 assists) had four points in the contest. Junior Sarah Bancroft scored three goals, while senior Caroline Simmons, senior co-captain Natalie Curtis and seniorTara Schoen each had two goals.

The Crimson scored early and often in the game as Halpern put the first points on the board one minute into the game. Her unassisted tally was the first of 11 first half goals by the Crimson and the first of Halpern's four first half tallies. Bobzin added to the Crimson lead after 2:56 minutes of play on a feed from Martin. Martin found Curtis for Harvard's third goal of the game with 23 minutes left to play. After taking a 6-0 lead midway through the first half, the Crimson scored four goals in three minutes to take a 10-0 lead with almost seven minutes left in the half.

Harvard continued its offensive efforts in the second half and held an 18-0 advantage with 10 minutes left in the half. Holy Cross got on the board with just over five minutes left in the game. Kristine Corkum scored that goal for the Crusaders and Meg O'Leary added another on an Ali Baird feed 90 seconds later.

Senior Kathryn Tylander shut out the Crusaders in the first half and stopped six shots, while sophomore Katherine Martino made three saves in the second stanza.

Harvard travels to Amherst, Mass. for a 1:00 p.m. game at Massachusetts Saturday, March 1.
