No. 11 Washington College Runs Past Kean
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eleventh-ranked host Washington College used a 7-0 first quarter to run away from visiting Kean University en route to a 20-5 men's lacrosse victory this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, while the Cougars fell to 0-1 with the loss.
Junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) led the Shoremen with three goals and three assists in the win, while senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) finished with three goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Nick Gregory (Riva, MD/South River) added three goals and one assists, while senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored two goals and assisted on two others. Freshman attackman Shane Kaski (Richmond, VA/Midlothian) fired in a pair of goals, sophomore midfielder Will Fletcher (Roanoke, VA/Woodberry Forest) scored one goal and handed out three assists, and sophomore attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) had a goal and two assists.
Senior midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) and junior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) rounded out Washington's multiple-point getters with one goal and one assist each. Freshman attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin), junior midfielder Kyle van Oostendorp (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow), and freshman attackman Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) each scored one goal in the win, while junior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) had one assist.
Scott Leathem led Kean with two goals, while Anthony Bertucci, Sean Cope, and Mike Terry each had one. C.J. Gannon tallied the Cougars' lone assist.
Washington enjoyed a 59-35 advantage in shots and a 54-27 advantage in ground balls. The Shoremen won 21 of the game's 27 face-offs, including all 15 in the second half. Washington junior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) was 18-of-22 on face-offs.
Junior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made seven saves and allowed three goals in the first 50:48 for the Shoremen, while junior Danny Walker (Ellicott City, MD/Glenelg Country School) made six saves and allowed two goals in the final 9:12. Dave Nichols started in goal for Kean, making nine saves and allowing 11 goals in 38:23. John Gesumaria made seven saves and allowed seven goals in 14:12, and Greg Egan had one save and allowed two goals in 7:25.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Virginia Wesleyan.
