Guilford Drops Decision to Christopher Newport
Greensboro, N.C. – Bonnie Hansen scored four goals and Katie Doherty added three goals and two assist in visiting Christopher Newport University's 16-11 lacrosse victory at Guilford College Sunday in the Quakers' season opener.
The Captains (2-1) scored 10 of the game's first 12 goals and led, 11-4, at halftime. Hansen scored twice and Christine Mike added two goals during a 6-0 Christopher Newport burst over a 10-minute stretch midway through the half.
Guilford's Carrie Ernst scored her third goal of the game to start the second half, which made it an 11-5 contest, but the Captains answered with a 4-1 run that opened a 15-6 margin with 14:28 to play. Guilford rallied to within 15-10 with 5:08 to play, but drew no closer.
Seven different Captains tallied goals, including Mike, who finished with three scores. Teammate Shayna Sargent contributed two goals and two assists.
Ernst's four points (3 goals, 1 assist) paced Guilford's offense. Jordan Clodfelter, Carolyn Rodda and Caryn Washington all scored twice for the Quakers. Guilford's Jennifer Abelin enjoyed a solid defensive game with five ground balls and three caused turnovers, both game highs.
Guilford returns to action Saturday (3/1) against visiting Goucher College as 12 noon. Christopher Newport visits Ferrum Saturday (3/1) in a 4:00 p.m. USA South Athletic Conference match.
