Stony Brooks Holds on for Victory Over Duquesne
Denver, Colo. (February 24, 2008) – Junior Jenna Celano's (Farmingdale, N.Y.) free-position goal with 10:09 left in the second half proved to be the game-winner and junior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and freshman Melissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each tallied late goals as the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team held on for a 21-18 victory over Duquesne on Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Stadium in Denver, Colorado. Stony Brook is 2-1 on the season while Duquesne remains winless at 0-3.
Leggio, who was held scoreless Friday night against Denver, scored the first goal for Stony Brook just 25 seconds in. After Duquesne tied it at two, the midfield duo of Leggio and junior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) scored on free-positions shots 33 seconds apart. The Dukes immediately answered with two more goals but Hallion and freshman Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) helped Stony Brook regain the momentum with goals to make the score, 6-4.
The Seawolves took their third two-goal advantage of the game following tallies from senior Diana Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.). Duquesne's Meghan Frederick's goal with 3:23 remaining in the first half gave the Dukes' their first lead of the game. Stony Brook would have an answer, scoring two goals in the final minutes of the first half. Senior Brooke Souder (Pottstown, Pa.) scored on a free-position shot and Leggio's score with 23 seconds left in the half gave the Seawolves a 12-11 halftime lead.
Coming out of the locker room, Duquesne tied it at 12 but the Seawolves regained their composure to regain the lead, 15-12. Freshman Samantha Djaha (East Islip, N.Y.), Hallion and Cook each scored a goal to give Stony Brook a three-goal advantage with 25:05 left in the game.
Down 17-13, Duquesne scored the next four goals helped by two scores from Ashley Wood. Celano's free-position attempt with 10:09 was good to help Stony Brook regain the lead. Cook's goal with 1:48 left was the final score of the game as Stony Brook fought off a tough Duquesne squad, 21-18.
Leggio and Cook each had four goals and an assist and Hallion had four goals and three assists. Caroleo and Celano each had a hat trick for the Seawolves.
Freshman Jamie Carlson (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had 10 saves in goal for SB.
Stony Brook is back in action on March 8 when it takes on Brown University. First draw control is set for noon.
