WASHINGTON, DC - Senior middie Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) scored the Blue Jays first three goals as #9 Johns Hopkins defeated George Washington 12-2 Tuesday afternoon. The Blue Jays even their record at 1-1 while the Colonials fall to 0-2.
Stamper put the Blue Jays on the board just 2:22 in on a free position goal and then 59 seconds later, scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage and buried it in the net for her second of the afternoon. Katherine Sampson made it a one-goal game at 8:30 with a free position goal, but that's as close as the Colonials would get for the remainder of the game as Hopkins rattled off nine straight goals.
Stamper completed her hat trick at 11:26 when sophomore Brett Bathras (Severna Park, MD/Severn) fed her the ball from behind the cage and she fired a quick shot past Caitlin Garman. Sophomore defender Angela Hughes (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) scored her first career goal when she intercepted the ball at midfield and sprinted to the cage, firing a low shot past Garman to make it 4-1 Hopkins. Bathras and sophomore Paige Ibello (Cockeysville, MD/Maryvale) followed with goals just 52 seconds apart to extend the Blue Jays lead. Freshman Brianna Cronin (Arlington, MA/Arlington) closed out the scoring for the half with her third of the season at 21:39.
Hopkins slowed things down in the second half, working the ball around on offense. Ibello potted her second goal of the day 10:49 into the second off a feed from sophomore Danielle Ensley (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park). Ensley then found junior Gina Maranto (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) on a similar play to give the Blue Jays a 9-1 advantage. Cronin and Maranto added free position goals before GW's Hayley McDonough scored on a quick pass from Audrey Joy to end the Blue Jays' run. Freshman Ashley White (Thurmont, MD/Walkersville) closed out the scoring with her first career goal on a free position shot with 59 seconds to play.
