Cornell Dominates in Season-Opening Win at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/27/08) - On a snowy, blustry afternoon in Upstate New York, Cornell earned a 16-7 win over Colgate in women's lacrosse at Tyler's Field. The Big Red begin their season with a 1-0 record, while the Raiders drop to 1-3 on the year.

National player of the year candidate Courtney Farrell paced the Cornell offense with three goals and three assists. Senior Noelle Dowd and sophomore Kathryn Dewey both contributed three goals and an assist for the Big Red.

Colgate got goals from seven different players, including freshman Kate Bergstrom (San Francisco, Calif.), who netted the first goal of her career on a second-half free-position attempt. Classmate Lizzie Kusbit (Rockville, Md.) also earned her first collegiate point with an assist in the second half.

Cornell found the back of the Raider net three times before Colgate was able to respond. After senior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) got the home team on the board, however, the Big Red rattled off seven straight goals to go up 10-1 with 8:50 to play. Colgate netted two of the last five goals of the half to make the scoreboard read 13-3 at the break.

The scoring became less frequent in the second half, as the teams traded goals three times over most of the session. The Raiders ended the game by scoring twice within the last 3:30; Bergstrom scored the first of those two goals, and assisted on the second.

Colgate junior Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) made five saves over the first 47:20 before she was relieved by freshman Amy Irwin (Sewell, N.J.), who posted one save on two shots in her first collegiate appearance. Junior Renee Hughes earned the win in net for Cornell after making seven stops.

The Big Red outshot Colgate 31-23 on the day, including 23-12 in the first half. Cornell earned the edge in groundballs, 18-17, and dominated on draws, 18-7, including a 13-4 first-half advantage.

The Raiders are at No. 16/18 Penn State on Sunday, Mar. 2, for a game that begins at 1:00 p.m.
