Sacred Heart Defeats Wagner, 17-7
Staten Island, NY - Senior midfielder Mike Hess (Potomac, MD/ The Heights School), junior attack Jeff Policicchio (Novi. MI/ Novi) and freshman attack Will Macumber (Manorville, NY/ Eastport South Manor) each scored two goals but Wagner was unable to overcome a big early deficit in dropping a 17-7 decision to Sacred Heart.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 0-4 on the season while the Pioneers, due to inclement weather, were playing their 2008 season opener.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one quarter and extended the advantage to 12-2 at halftime. Trailing 16-2 after three quarters, Wagner out-scored Sacred Heart 5-1 in the final quarter as Policicchio and Macumber tallied each of their goals in the late-going.
Junior midfielder Brian Poissant (Manlius, NY/ Fayetteville-Manlius) also notched a goal for Wagner on this bitter cold, wind-swept afternoon at Wagner College Stadium.
Junior Brandon Wasczak (Fredeick, MD/ Linganore) had 12 saves in goal for the Seahawks. Timmy Katz and Tony Tanzi scored three goals apiece to pace Sacred Heart. The Pioneers out-shot Wagner 40-34 while the Seahawks held a 24-20 edge in ground balls.
Wagner is next in action on Sat., March 8 when the Seahawks travel to Lehigh. Face-off is set for 1:00 pm.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (February 29, 2008) – After getting snowed out for the 2008 opener a week ago, the Sacred Heart Pioneers officially got the season underway Friday afternoon with a 17-7 win at Wagner College. The Pioneers got three goals and two assists from sophomore Timmy Katz (Freeport, NY) and three goals from senior captain Tony Tanzi (Mahopac, NY) as they kick-off the season with the win.
The Pioneers (1-0) got out of the gates to a 3-0 lead after goals by junior Bobby Karl (Clifton Park, NY), freshman James Mohrman (Hicksville, NY) and Tanzi. Wagner got their first marker of the afternoon at 3:38 of the first quarter on a Mike Hess unassisted goal. SHU closed the quarter with goals from junior attacker Dan Casciano (Syracuse, NY) and Tanzi for a 5-1 lead.
Sacred Heart kept their foot on the gas offensively and ran off seven-straight before a late Wagner goal closed the first half. Tanzi notched his third while sophomore Evan Morgan (Asburn, VA) and Katz tacked on a pair during the run. Mohrman picked up his second and sophomore Jon Flood (Hauppauge, NY) added a goal, both with less than a minute to play in the second.
The third quarter was all Sacred Heart as well with the Pioneers tacking on four more to take a 16-2 lead, coasting to the win. All three Pioneer goalkeepers appeared in the win with senior captain Ricardo Vargas (Falls Church, VA) earning the win in a half of play. Sophomore Zack Frank (Islip Terrace, NY) made eight saves playing the third quarter.
SHU will be back in action on Wednesday, March 5th for their home opener, hosting Manhattan College.
