St. John Fisher 13, Guilford 6
Greensboro, N.C. – Chris Schmidt scored four goals and an assist in visiting St. .John Fisher's 13-6 men's lacrosse victory over Guilford College Friday afternoon. The Cardinals move to 2-0 and complete a sweep of their two games in Greensboro after beating Greensboro College, 12-4, Wednesday. Guilford falls to 0-2.
Schmidt first dent the twice late in the first quarter with an extra-man goal that tied the game at 2-2. The tally also triggered a 4-0 Cardinals' spurt that gave the guests a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes of the third period. Guilford's Matt Meriwether answered with an unassisted goal 55 seconds later, but Mike Cummins scored a man-up goal and Schmidt followed with two more scores that gave St. John Fisher an insurmountable 8-3 lead with 14:38 left in regulation.
Eight different Cardinals found the back of the net, including Mike Cortina, who finished with three scores. Scott Bowen added three points with a goal and a game-high two assists. Dave Wood scored a goal and an assist, but more importantly, won 13-of-16 face-offs and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls.
Defenseman Tyler Harrison paced the Quakers' offense with a goal and an assist. Andrew Vigne played all but the last 1:44 in goal and made a season-high 18 saves.
Guilford returns to action Sunday (3/2) versus visiting Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m. The Cardinals host SUNY Plattsburgh March 6 at 4:00 p.m. in their home opener.
