Towson Ends Long Drought Against Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior midfielder Hillary Fratzke scored a game-high three goals and added two assists to lead the Tigers (2-0) to their second straight win, a 14-9 non-conference victory over Loyola College (1-4) in the Greyhounds' home opener at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win allowed the Tigers to snap a 25-game losing streak to their Charles Street rival. It was Towson's first win in the series since May 2, 1982, a 4-3 victory at then-Curley Field in the EAIAW semi-finals. Loyola leads the series by a 28-8 margin.

"Our players really stepped up with the game plan and in the end, it worked out for us," Towson Coach Missy Doherty said. "I think we have a really talented team this year and it's fun to see for the players that the tradition is changing."

Led by a goal and an assist from Fratzke and sophomore Jacie Kendall, the Tigers jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first 9:53 of the game. However, the Greyhounds scored three goals over a three-minute span to tie the game at 4-4 with 17:32 remaining in the stanza.

Junior midfielder Britt Woodfield regained the Tiger lead at 5-4 when scored her second goal of the game, a free position shot with 9:57 remaining in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Nikki Marcinik and Fratzke added goals just 31 seconds apart late in the half to give Towson a 7-4 advantage at the intermission.

Trailing by three goals, the Greyhounds evened the score with three quick markers in a four-minute span to tie the game at 7-7. Junior attacker Colleen O'Keefe led Loyola during the rally with a goal and an assist.

However, the Tigers rallied and scored six straight goals over the next 14 minutes to take a 13-7 lead they did not relinquish. Fratzke and Marcinik each scored a goal and added an assist during the spurt as the Tigers held Loyola scoreless for nearly 17 minutes.

The Greyhounds ended the drought with 9:02 remaining when freshman Grace Gavin tallied her second goal of the game, an unassisted marker past senior goalkeeper Mandy Corry. But, junior Sarah McCausland quickly answered for the Tigers with an unassisted goal to regain a six-goal advantage.

Gavin added her third goal with 1:39 left, but the Greyhounds got no closer as Corry and the Tiger defense held off a rally to earn the victory.

Fratzke led the Tigers with three goals and two assists while Marcinik added three goals with an assist. Corry recorded a season-high 11 saves for the Tigers, who outshot Loyola by a commanding 41-24 margin.

"We had a feeling that it was going to be our day and Missy told us that we weren't going to lose if we remained positive and focused," Corry said. "We've been practicing really hard all week and we just wanted this one so bad.

"It's something I have wanted to do for four years," she added about winning against Loyola. "This is arguably my favorite win in my career."

Gavin and freshman Abby Rehfuss each scored three goals in the loss for Loyola while O'Keefe added two goals with two assists. Freshman goalkeeper Meg Steffe made a season-high 15 saves in a losing effort.

The Tigers will conclude their two-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to American University for a 3:30 p.m. game against the Eagles.
