No. 19 Bucknell Edges Ohio State in Triple Overtime
LEWISBURG, Pa. – John Togneri (Longmeadow, Mass./Loomis-Chaffee) scored an unassisted goal with 2:25 left in the third overtime period to help the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Togneri was one of three Bison players with two goals in the contest.
Bucknell, which is ranked 19th nationally, upended the No. 20 Buckeyes to improve to 2-1 this season. It was the first win over a ranked opponent for the Bison since they defeated then-No. 17 Army at West Point last April.
Bucknell, which was outshot 34-19 in regulation, had plenty of chances in the overtime periods, but Ohio State goalie Stefan Schroder made two of his eight saves in the second overtime. Togneri, who had brought the Bison to within one (6-5) with his first goal early in the fourth quarter, finally ended the contest that was played under both sunny skies and intermittent snow squalls.
The Bison trailed 6-4 after Ohio State (1-2) ended a 3-0 run with a goal by Kevin Buchanan seconds into the third quarter. However, they netted four of the next five goals for their second consecutive one-goal home victory.
After falling behind 1-0 early, Bucknell tallied three consecutive goals, including a pair in man-up situations. The Bison then scored just one goal over the next 17 minutes of play before their late-game rally. Bucknell was strong in man-up situations, netting three goals in its first four chances. Overall, the Bison were 3-for-6. Ohio State failed to score on its only man-advantage opportunity.
Austin Winter (Boonton Townshio, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Tim Brandau (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) joined Togneri with two goals for Bucknell. Winter also dished out a career-high four assists. He scored the game-tying goal with 3:35 left in regulation off an assist from Togneri.
Nick Sciubba (Sea Cliff, N.Y./Salisbury School) was strong in net for Bucknell, registering 12 saves to bring his season total to 35. Just 19 of the Buckeyes' 35 shots in the game were on goal.
Buchanan and Jeff Ryan paced Ohio State with two goals apiece, while Joel Dalgarno registered a pair of assists.
The Bison, who have won their last five of their last six overtime games, will continue their five-game homestand next Saturday, March 8, when they host Mount St. Mary's at 1:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
