No. 11 Georgetown Downs St. John's in ECAC Action

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 1, 2008) -- Despite the Red Storms three-goal run late in the fourth period, the No. 9/11 Georgetown Hoyas outscored St. Johns lacrosse 13-7 in its season-first ECAC contest Saturday afternoon at the Hoya Multi-Sport Field.

Saturday's game was the Red Storms first conference loss of 2008, as St. Johns record falls to 0-3, 0-1 ECAC. The Hoyas earned their first win of the season to even out their record at 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Eight players earned at least one point for the Red Storm. Senior Justin ODonnell and junior Tom Manes once again led the scoring effort with two points each.

The Red Storm was first on the board as midfielder ODonnell stuffed the ball behind Hoya goaltender Miles Kass six minutes into the first period.

However, the Hoyas answered right back, scoring four consecutive goals on sophomore goaltender Gavin Buckley. The scoring run was led off by junior attackman Jake Samperton and ended with junior midfielder Chris Taylors unassisted goal with 1:30 to go in the first quarter.

To put an end to the Hoya run, junior Tom Manes found classmate Trevor Michaelsen in front the Georgetown net scoring man-up on the Hoyas with 9:08 left in the half.

Transfer Malcolm Miles repeated the effort scoring his second goal of the season with 7:51 left on the clock, bringing the Red Storm within one goal, 4-3, halfway through the period.

Feeling the pressure from the Red Storm offense, the Hoyas repeated their first quarter performance scoring another three unanswered goals, two by senior attackman Brendan Cannon giving Georgetown a four goal lead going into the second half.

In the third, the Hoyas scored four-straight goals to put Georgetown ahead 11-3 as Cannon earned his first hat trick of the season.

With just under five minutes left in the third, senior midfielder Chris DeMarco cleared the ball down the field, passing the ball off to senior attackman Graeme Gillespie right in front of the net. Gillespie closed in on Kass, picked up his own rebound and powered the ball to the back of the net for the Red Storms first goal since 7:51 in the second period.

The Hoyas came right back, adding two more to tally 13 goals with six minutes left to play.

Giving it a last ditch effort, St. Johns came right back with the time dwindling on the clock to score three-straight.

Senior Rob Gannon ripped off his third goal of the season as Manes tossed it to him in front the Hoyas back up goaltender Christian McCormack.

One minute later, the Red Storm capitalized on a one-minute cross-checking penalty by Phil Mufarri as ODonnell passed the ball to junior Drew Schanen who scored his first goal of the season, fourth of his career with 1:56 to go.

Senior Tom Michaelsen, making his first appearance on the turf this season, put the cap on the three-goal run with just over a minute left on the game clock, marking his 61st career goal.

Despite 13 goals, Buckley had quite a day between the pipes, saving 11 of 24 Hoya shots on goal, his second-straight 11 save appearance.

The Red Storm controlled the action at the face-off X winning 16 of 24 draws. Senior Jack Rosson won 12 of 18 from the X, while junior Dom DeNapoli won two of his three turns. Freshman Eric Schmit made his debut at the midfield line, also winning two of three face-offs.

The man-up defensive unit continued its successful streak, stopping four of five Georgetown power plays.
