PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's lacrosse team scored six goals in the first half of its game with Villanova Saturday at Franklin Field, but was held to just one in the second half.

Fortunately, that one turned out to be just enough, as the Quaker defense allowed the Wildcats only two in the final 30 minutes. The result was a 7-6 victory that evened Penn's record at 1-1. Villanova fell to 1-2 with the defeat.

Al Kohart led the Penn offense with three goals, while Alex Weber had two. Craig Andrzejewski scored a goal and dished out two assists for three points, and J.J. Lian had a goal and an assist.

Penn never trailed in the contest, but the fans were certainly kept on the edge of their seats during the day thanks to a superb day by Villanova goalie Andrew DiLoreto, who had 13 saves.

Penn got on the board first, when Kohart finished a Lian feed less than a minute into the game. Nova answered a minute later, and then Kohart finished an Andrzejewski feed to make it 2-1 before the game was four minutes old. With six minutes left in the opening stanza, Lian scored an unassisted goal, and after one period Penn was up, 3-1.

Andrzejewski made it 4-1 early in the second quarter, finishing a feed from Corey Winkoff, before Villanova responded with a pair of goals just 16 seconds apart. The first came from Jay Foley, off a feed from Ryan Lewis, and then Mike Brennan had an unassisted goal to make the score 4-3.

Kohart and Villanova's Tim Driscoll traded goals 1:44 apart midway through the second, and then just 20 seconds after Driscoll's goal Weber netted his first to give Penn a 6-4 lead with 4:41 still left before halftime.

The offenses stalled out after that, scoring just three more times the rest of the way.

Penn opened the lead up to 7-4 with 6:39 left in the third when Weber netted an unassisted goal, but the Quakers were stymied the rest of the way.

Villanova cut the lead to two with 4:38 left in the third, on a Tim Langan goal, and after nearly 19 scoreless minutes cut the Quaker lead to one when Matt Panneton scored just as a Penn penalty was being released.

For Penn, Chris Casey made four saves to get the win. The Quakers outshot the Wildcats on the day, 32-17.

Penn is back in action next Saturday for its first road game, traveling to Denver, Colo., to participate in the Face-Off Classic with host Denver, Air Force, and Brown. The Quakers will play Air Force Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. local), and then face the host Pioneers Sunday at 3:30 Eastern (1:30 local).
