Stony Brook Drops Close Game at Harvard, 9-6
Cambridge, Mass. (Mar. 1, 2008) - Tied at halftime 4-4, the Stony Brook men's lacrosse team saw Harvard score five straight to start the second half that was enough to carry the Crimson to a 9-6 victory over the Seawolves. Senior Ryan Hughes (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) led SBU with three goals, including scoring the final two of the game.
Harvard (1-1) started the game by scoring three goals over the first six minutes to take the early lead. Jesse Fehr connected on an unassisted goal at the 9:11 mark that put Harvard up 3-0. Six minutes later senior Bo Tripodi (Hauppauge, N.Y.) got Stony Brook (0-2) on the board, taking a pass from freshman Jordan McBride (New Westminster, British Columbia) and beating the Harvard goalie for his second score of the year. Senior Bobby Trenkle (Commack, N.Y.) made it two-in-a-row less than 1:30 later and the Seawolves were within one at the end of the quarter.
Fehr scored again for Harvard two minutes into the second, but Hughes converted on an extra-man opportunity with less than five minutes left to bring Stony Brook within one again. With 2:35 left in the half the Seawolves got the equalizer when sophomore Kevin Crowley (New Westminster, British Columbia) scored off an assist from senior Owen Adams (Norwalk, Conn.).
With the game tied starting the third quarter, Harvard began what proved to be the difference in the game when it started its five-goal spurt with the third score from Fehr on an extra-man opportunity. The Crimson added two more in the quarter while blanking Stony Brook, taking a 7-4 lead after three periods.
In the first three and a half minutes of the fourth Harvard put in two more goals, taking a 9-4 advantage after a score by Dean Gibbons. Stony Brook rallied with a pair of goals, both by Hughes in a three-minute span, but the Seawolves were shutout over the final five minutes as Harvard went on to the win.
Stony Brook will host its season-opener in its next action when it plays Siena next Saturday, March 8, at noon.
