No. 8 Penn Hands No. 6 North Carolina First Loss
CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 6 in this week's IWLCA coaches poll and Inside Lacrosse media poll, received their first loss of the season against the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. The deciding goal came in the last 14 seconds by Penn's Melissa Lehman, who was unassisted in her third goal of the match. The loss now leaves Carolina 4-1 and improves Penn to 2-0.
The Tar Heels were led by Kristen Carr with three goals. Following Carr was Chelsea Parks with two goals, and Megan Bosica and Julie Ryan contributing one a piece. Ryan also had one assist along with Jamie Hanssen, who also had one.
The Quakers were led by Becca Edwards who had three goals and Lehman with three. Ali DeLuca and Chelsea Kocis scored one a piece for Penn.
The Quakers led 4-3 at halftime, handing Carolina its lowest scoring first half this season. Carr scored the first two goals of the game for the Tar Heels at the 28:09 and 27:41 mark, one on a free position shot and the other assisted by Ryan. Then at 24:27 Penn scored its first goal by Lehman. After 10 minutes of play, Bosica contributed her one goal to the match, which was then proceeded by three goals by Penn's Edwards, Kocis, DeLuca before heading into the second half.
The Tar Heels started off the second half with Carr contributing her third goal of the game, off a free position shot, which came at 27:51. Her goal was quickly answered by Lehman less than a minute later making the score 4-5. The Tar Heels then made back-to-back goals, both by Parks, with one assist from Hanssen, which gave Carolina the lead 6-5 with 25:41 to go. Penn's Edwards then scored her second goal of the evening, which tied the score 6-6. After another 10 minutes of play, Ryan scored an unassisted shot giving Carolina a one point lead.
In final minutes of play, Penn's Edwards scored her third goal of the game, assisted by DeLuca, with three minutes left, which tied the game at 7-7. It was then in the final seconds of play that Penn's Lehman scored the final unassisted goal leading the Quakers to their second win of the season and Carolina to its first loss.
The Tar Heels will return to action Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against No. 12 Vanderbilt at Fetzer Field.
