#2 Gettysburg Opens with Win vs. #17 Hampden-Sydney
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 1, 2008)-Hampden-Sydney sophomore midfielder Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk) scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) contributed one goal and one assist, but it was not enough as No. 2 Gettysburg College defeated the 17th-ranked Tigers, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. Senior goalkeeper Phil Hage (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy) logged a gritty defensive effort, as the net minder registered 11 saves in 24 shots faced while also picking up seven ground balls.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Bullets improve to 1-0 overall.
The Bullets opened the match firing on all cylinders, recording the first four goals of the afternoon, two coming courtesy of Tom O'Donnell. After Jett's first strike of the contest closed the gap to 4-1 with 5:52 left in the first quarter, Gettysburg's Ben Sufrin re-established the four goal advantage with a goal just under 90 seconds later.
Hampden-Sydney fought back with three consecutive goals, spearheaded by Hovis and Jett; Hovis assisted on junior attackman Kenny Mathison's (East Northport, NY/Northport) goal with 1:50 remaining in the opening stanza, then scored on his own just over two minutes into the second quarter to draw the Tigers within 5-3. Jett's second goal of the afternoon on an assist from senior defenseman Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) brought Hampden-Sydney within one at 5-4 with 11:49 to play in the first half.
The Bullets responded well, increasing their advantage to three, 7-4, by the break on goals by Kjael Skaalerud, Joe Brody and Drew Duckworth.
Gettysburg held a 9-4 lead at the 11:43 mark in the third period before senior captain Joe Daugherty (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) found the net on a man-up opportunity following a feed from junior attackman Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) to shrink the margin to back to four with 9:08 to play in the third. However, the Tigers were unable to inflict anymore damage as the Bullets left Hampden-Sydney with a victory in their season opener.
The Bullets held an advantage in shots (32-27) and ground balls (42-38), while both Gettysburg and Hampden-Sydney earned 11-of-22 face offs.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Wednesday, March 5 when it travels to Newport News, VA to square off with Christopher Newport University. Game time will be announced shortly.
