No. 9 Washington & Lee Stops Christopher Newport
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee womens lacrosse team started the second half with seven-straight goals in claiming a 13-6 victory over Christopher Newport in the home-opener on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals led 5-2 at the half before junior attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) began the second period barrage with an unassisted goal just 1:15 after intermission. That was followed by a pair of goals by senior midfielder Megan Slosson (Cockeysville, Md./Maryvale Prep), two more from freshman midfielder Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes-Belfield) and single tallies from senior attacker Christine Bender (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and sophomore attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) for a 12-2 lead with 9:41 left.
The Captains (2-2) rallied with four-straight goals including a pair from freshman attacker Kaitlin Quigley (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley) to make it a 12-6 game with 1:19 remaining in the contest, but could get no closer as the Generals improved to 3-0 on the season.
Washington and Lee was led by Benders three goals and two goals and one assist from junior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County). Slosson, Megargel and Flippen all notched two goals apiece, while junior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) tallied two assists. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Tilbor (West Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) played the entire contest and recorded 11 saves.
Christopher Newport was led by Quigleys two goals, while freshman attacker Meghan Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) chipped in one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Gayle Robinson (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and freshman Rachel Gillam (Easton, Md./Easton) both saw action between the pipes for the Captains combining to make six saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday at Hollins for a 4:00 pm game.
