Denver Falls to No. 9 Georgetown in Overtime

DENVER – Sophomore Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) scored five goals, as the No. 15 University of Denver women's lacrosse team tried to upset No. 9 Georgetown at Barton Stadium on Monday afternoon. However, the Hoyas scored two goals in overtime to take a 12-11 victory.

"It was a well played game by both teams," said head coach Liza Kelly. "Obviously, I wish we would have come out on top. We have to have high expectations and hold ourselves accountable to them every day."

Denver (2-3) led for most of the game until Georgetown's Bunny O'Reilly scored two goals in the final five minutes to five the Hoyas (4-0) their first lead with 58 seconds remaining. The Pioneers bounced back when junior Karen Morton (Adelaide, Australia) buried a pass from junior Steph Coyne (Baltimore, Md.) with 19 seconds left to send the game to overtime with the score knotted at 10-10.

Coyne put the Pioneers back in front, sprinting down the field and firing a laser past Georgetown goalkeeper Caitlin Formby just 24 seconds into the first overtime period. With 1:14 remaining in overtime, Georgetown's Molly Ford tied the game at 11-11 off a pass from Jordy Kirr, and Ashby Kaestner scored an unassisted goal with just 17 seconds left to give the Hoyas the victory.

In addition to Sanders' five goals, Morton had two goals and three assists, and Coyne added a goal and four assists. Kaestner and Ford both had hat tricks for the Hoyas, while Kirr recorded a game-high five assists.

The loss was the first for the Pioneers at Barton Lacrosse stadium since losing to then No. 2 Duke on February 16, 2007. The Pioneers continue their home stretch against Connecticut at Barton Stadium on March 11 at 4:00 p.m.

Denver, Colo. - The No. 9 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 12-11 overtime victory at No. 15 Denver on Monday afternoon at the Pioneers' Baton Lacrosse Stadium. The Hoyas, who improve to 4-0 on the season, received the game-winning goal from sophomore Ashby Kaestner with just 17 seconds to go in the second overtime period.

Georgetown trailed 6-5 at intermission but battled back. The Hoyas held the lead just two times in the game, 11-10 and 12-11. Denver scored the first goal in OT, in the opening seconds. Near the end of the first overtime session, Kaestner caused a turnover and on the Hoyas' offensive possession, Jordy Kirr assisted on Molly Ford's goal to tie the game at 11-11.

The game remained scoreless for a good portion of the second OT period. After a Denver foul, Kaestner raced through the midfield, and netted the game-winner with just 17 ticks remaining.

Kirr finished with a goal and five assists while Kaestner, Ford and Megan Bloomer all tallied two goals apiece. Caitlin Formby earned the win in goal.

"Denver got a lot of the 50-50 balls today," said GU head coach Ricky Fried. "I'm glad we were able to pull out the victory even though we didn't play our best game."
