#5 Gettysburg Wins Two Monday; Cantele Gets 200th
ORLANDO, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team made short work of its two foes on Monday, March 3, and in doing so grabbed victory No. 200 for Head Coach Carol Cantele. The Bullets began with a 20-4 Centennial Conference victory over Muhlenberg College and capped the day's festivities with a milestone 21-2 non-conference decision over Gwynedd-Mercy College at the Wide World of Disney Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla.
Cantele, Gettysburg's all-time winningest coach, is the ninth NCAA Division III head coach to earn 200 victories in women's lacrosse, doing so in just 16 seasons. With the Bullets 3-0 start to 2008, she owns a career record of 200-72 (.735).
The competition couldn't stand up to the nationally-ranked Orange & Blue as Muhlenberg (0-1) fell to 0-20 all-time against Gettysburg. The Bullets scored each of the first five goals of the game, including three by sophomore Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury). After the Mules stopped the run with a goal at 22:06, Gettysburg erupted for a 6-0 streak as sophomore Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School) posted three consecutive goals in a span of just 2:07. The Bullets ended the first half holding a 14-3 advantage.
Gettysburg once again struck early in the final period against Muhlenberg and continued the onslaught by scoring each of the first seven goals before the Mules scored a goal at 1:02 to set the final margin.
Stahl finished with five goals, while Crane was perfect on all four of her shot attempts en route to establishing a new career-high. Senior Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) accounted for eight scores in the contest, netting a hat trick and dishing out a season-high five assists. Senior Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) tallied three goals and two assists, while classmate Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) paced the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, two ground balls, and three draw controls.
Sophomore Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) played the first 44:14 in goal for Gettysburg, making four saves, while allowing three goals. Freshman Laura McIntyre (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) finished off the final 15:46 by making one save and allowing one goal.
The regular starters received a break in the day's second contest against Gwynedd-Mercy, but there was not much of a let down from the reserves. Four freshmen reached the scoring column for the first time in their young careers, while four sophomores notched career highs for goals scored. Sophomore Grace Concannon (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) led the charge with six goals and two assists, while classmate Erin Cushing (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) tossed in four goals and added a pair of helpers. Sophomore Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman Heidi Bitter (Darien, Conn./Westminster) each tallied their first career hat tricks, the former adding a pair of assists.
Gettysburg put both of its freshmen goalies in between the pipes with McIntyre allowing two scores, while stopping seven shots in 41:26 and Laura Block (Leesburg, Va./Foxcroft School) making a pair of saves in the final 18:34.
The Bullets will aim to make it a 5-0 start to the season with a pair of non-conference contests on Wednesday, March 5, in Florida. Gettysburg begins the day with Roanoke College at 9:30 a.m. followed by Wittenberg University at 12:30 p.m.
