Tigers Use Strong Second Half to Defeat American

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior midfielder Hillary Fratzke and sophomore attacker Jacie Kendall combined to score seven goals with three assists as the Tigers (3-0) used a strong second-half effort to win their third straight game, a 17-8 non-conference victory over American University (1-4) at the Eagles' Jacobs Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Fratzke, who was named as the CAA Player of the Week on Monday, scored three goals with three assists while Kendall tallied a career-high four goals.

After Amanda Makoid gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the first half, the Tigers used three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage with 16:24 remaining in the period. Fratzke scored a goal with an assist during the spurt.

The Tigers and the Eagles exchanged goals four times over the final 15 minutes, giving the Tigers a two-goal lead at the intermission. Sophomore midfielder Nikki Marcinik scored two goals in the stanza.

Leading by 7-5 at the half, the Tigers outscored the Eagles by a 10-3 margin in the second half to pull away for the victory. The teams traded goals to open the stanza before Fratzke scored back-to-back goals to extend the Towson advantage to 10-6 with 16:35 left in the period.

Following a goal by Lauren Aksionoff, the Tigers scored seven straight goals to extend their cushion to 17-7 with 33 seconds remaining. Kendall scored three of her four goals during the spurt to lead the Tigers.

Junior attacker Gina Ibello scored with 23 seconds left to close the American deficit to 17-8.

While Fratzke and Kendall paced the Tigers in the victory, Marcinik added three goals and an assist. Sophomore Steph Taylor added two goals as the Tigers tied a season high with their 17-goal effort.

Senior attacker Jackie Lane led the Eagles with one goal and four assists in a losing effort.

The Tigers will return home on Saturday afternoon to host George Washington University at 1:00 p.m.
