No. 4 Syracuse Overpowers Visiting Binghamton
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse's offense, led by sophomore Halley Quillinan's (Bethlehem, N.Y.) career-high six goals and hat tricks from three other players, exploded as the No. 6 Orange women's lacrosse squad defeated Binghamton, 22-8, on Tuesday, March 4 in the Carrier Dome. It marked the second time this season Syracuse has scored 20 or more goals in a game.
Syracuse (3-1) has scored first in every game this season as sophomore Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) scored just 1:24 into the game to give the Orange the early lead. The goal started SU on an 8-0 scoring run during the next 16 minutes. Quillinan scored three goals during the run. After Binghamton's Ali Castiglie scored on a free position with 13:16 remaining in the half, Syracuse scored the next six goals and led 14-2 at intermission. The 14 goals equals the Orange's highest scoring half this season, as SU also scored 14 goals in the first half against Canisius.
The second half featured more Orange offense as Syracuse scored the first two goals of the half. The teams traded goals before Syracuse went on a 4-0 scoring run, and took its largest lead of the game on Jackie DePetris' (Radnor, Pa.) goal that gave SU a 21-4 advantage. Binghamton (2-3) scored four of the game's final five goals for the 22-8 final.
In addition to registering a career-high, Quillinan tied Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) for Syracuse's highest single-game goal total this season. Dove, DePetris and Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) recorded three goals each, while Rowan, Megan Mosenson (Malvern, Pa.) and Awehiyo Thomas (Six Nations, Ontario) added two goals apiece. Rowan added four assists, which ties her career high set last season against Loyola (Md.).
The Orange outshot Binghamton, 42-9, and had 17 ground balls to seven for the Bearcats. Syracuse held a 19-13 advantage in draw controls. Sandra Alvarez and Lauren Scott both played in goal for Binghamton. Alvarez recorded six saves, while Scott had one. Syracuse goalkeeper Liz Hogan (Victor, N.Y.) had one save.
Syracuse is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Hofstra in the Carrier Dome at noon. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Orange men's lacrosse squad, which takes on Georgetown at 3:30 p.m.

Sophomore Halley Quillinan, a third team IWLCA All-America recipient in 2007, led the nationally-ranked Orange with a game-high six goals. Katie Rowan also turned in a six-point effort with two goals and four assists.
Syracuse scored eight unanswered goals in the contest's first 15:06 and rolled to a 14-2 halftime lead. The Orange stretched their lead to 21-4 in the second half, but the Bearcats responded with a 4-1 run to close out the contest and create the final margin.
Freshman Beth Moore (Hauppauge, N.Y.) led Binghamton with three goals. Senior tri-captain Leanne Musso (Auburn, N.Y.) added a pair of goals, while sophomore Lizzie Wright (Massapequa, N.Y.) chipped in with a pair of assists.
Senior Sandra Alvarez (Port Washington, N.Y.) and freshman Lauren Scott (Jarrettsville, Md.) split time in net for the Bearcats combining for seven saves.
Binghamton (2-3, 0-1 AE) visits Monmouth on Sunday, March 9 for a noon contest.
