St. Mary's (Md.) Routs Hood, 23-5

St. Mary's City, Md. – Midfielders Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and Aileen McCausland (Phoenix, Md./Hereford) each notched six points in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a 23-5 rout of Hood College in Capital Athletic College action Wednesday afternoon.

Last week's conference player-of-the-week, Carrier notched five goals and an assist, while McCausland had a three-goal, three-assist performance as the Seahawks improved to 3-2 on the year and 2-0 in CAC play.

Three different St. Mary's players gave the Seahawks a 3-0 lead at 24:16 before freshman attacker Kelsey Blackwell (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) put Hood on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 21:57.

A 5-0 run gave St. Mary's an 8-1 margin with 15:13 left in the first half as five different Seahawks netted goals. Back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Brandy Noel (Severn, Md./Old Mill) had the Blazers (0-4, 0-3 CAC) trailing by five with 13:41 remaining. SMCM closed out the first stanza on a 6-2 run to own a 14-5 halftime lead.

Carrier scored all five of her goals in the second half as from the 4:25 mark in the first half to the 5:09 mark in the second period, the Seahawks rattled of 12 straight.

Junior midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, Md./Park) contributed a hat trick and an assist in the win, while freshman midfielder Aubrey Mirkin (Ashton, Md./Sherwood) also recorded three goals. Attackers Kelsey Branch (Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) and Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) each chipped in three points as Branch had a goal and two assists and Norris dished out three assists.

St. Mary's outshot the Blazers, 44-7, and had 28 ground balls to Hood's 12. The Seahawks also won 21 of 30 draw controls.

Freshman Ella Schoming (Westminster, Md./North Carroll) did not need to make a stop in picking up her third win between the pipes.

Leading the Blazers in the loss were Noel who finished with a hat trick and Blackwell who scored twice. Hood's five goals today were the most the Blazers have scored this season.

Senior Lauren Lieb (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) recorded 10 saves in the loss.

The Seahawks return to action this Saturday, March 8 when St. Mary's hosts non-conference opponent, Virginia Wesleyan College, at 3:00 in Seahawk Stadium.
