Long Island University Drops Decision to Bucknell

Lewisburg, Pa. – The Long Island University women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-5 decision to Bucknell at Graham Field on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomores Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) and Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) led the Blackbirds with two goals apiece.

The Blackbirds (0-3) fell into an early hole as the Bison scored the first three goals in the opening six minutes of the contest to take the lead from the start. LIU got on score back after Wienckowski scored an unassisted effort at the 24:05 mark to make it 3-1.

Bucknell (1-0) doubled the lead with two unanswered goals to go ahead 5-1. Wienckowski's second unassisted effort cut the deficit to three goals, but the Bison tacked on another goal just before halftime to make it 6-2 at the break.

After the Bison scored a goal less than a minute into the second period, LIU senior Sam Fischbeck (Baltimore, Md.) notched her first goal of the year to make it 7-3. Bucknell then put the game out of reach with a run of eight straight goals. Scheerer scored back-to-back goals for the Blackbirds to end the run, but two more Bison goals in the final four minutes accounted for the final score.

Bucknell held a 34-19 advantage in shots and forced 12 LIU turnovers. Freshman Kimberly Bostwick (East Northport, N.Y.) made seven saves in net for the Blackbirds. Julia Braun scored five goals for the Bison, while Alison Hefferan added three of her own to lead the attack. Alyssa DeLorenz made nine saves for the win.

Long Island is back in action on Saturday, March 15, when it travels to Moraga, Calif., to take on St. Mary's College in a 4:00 p.m. Eastern match.
