Romanowsky, Yanofksy Lead #11 Trinity by #13 Colby
Hartford, Conn. – Freshman midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) notched five goals and three assist in her collegiate debut and senior captain attacker C.J. Yanofsky (Needham, Mass.) scored five times with one assist to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 18-15 win over the visiting New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Colby College Mules in the women's lacrosse season opener for both teams this afternoon in steady rain on Sheppard Field.
Trinity, ranked No. 6 in the nation, never trailed and rattled off the final three goals of the first half to take an 11-7 lead at intermission. Yanofsky scored twice in a 10-second span with just under four minutes left in the first half, after Colby junior attacker Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, Mass.) had scored the last of four straight Mule goals to cut an 8-3 Trinity lead to 8-7 at the 6:09 mark. Trinity sophomore attacker Jenn Calvert (Barnard, Vt.) scored on a nice feed by Romanowsky with eight seconds remaining in the half.
Romanowsky opened the second half with a goal 30 seconds in, but Colby pulled to within a pair of scores on three straight goals to make the score 12-10 with 23:18 on the clock. A scoring drought ensued over the next 13:25, before Bantam junior midfielder Carrie Disa (Wilbraham, Mass.) scored her only goal of the game to spark a 5-0 Banta run that put the game out of reach.
Calvert joined Romanowsky and Yanofsky among the multiple scorers with three goals, while junior attacker Jesse Schultz (Troy, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists. Junior midfielder Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) led all goal scorers with six and added two assists, while sophomore attacker Caroline Atwater (Catonsville, Md.) scored three times, and sophomore midfielder Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) added two goals and one assist. Trinity junior goalie Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) totaled 15 saves and Colby sophomore backstop Keryn Meierdiercks (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) stopped eight shots. Colby outshot the Bantams, 41-34.
