Washington & Lee Falls in OT to #11 Washington College

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington College senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) scored unassisted with 58 seconds left in overtime to lift the 11th-ranked Shoremen to a 12-11 victory over Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (2-2) jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter on the strength of a pair of goals from senior attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate). However, the Shoremen (4-0) out-scored W&L, 4-0, in the second quarter to assume a 6-5 lead at the break.

Neither team led by more than two goals in the second half, with Washington taking a 9-7 lead at the 5:56 mark of the third period on consecutive goals by junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Kirby. However, W&L retaliated with three-straight markers, including a man-down goal by sophomore attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) off a feed from senior defenseman Spotty Robins (Richmond, Va./Woodberry Forest) for a 10-9 lead with 8:39 to play.

The Shoremen bounced back quickly, knotting the game at 10-10 just 14 seconds after Keigler's goal as senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) scored man-up off an assist from junior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, Md./Northwest). W&L junior midfielder Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) gave the Generals an 11-10 lead with an unassisted tally at the 4:42 mark, but WAC knotted the game with 2:59 left on an unassisted score by Read that sent the teams into overtime tied at 11-11.

Rider paced the W&L offense with four goals, while St. John tallied three goals. Keigler chipped in one goal and two assists. Junior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) stopped 12 shots in goal for the Generals.

Read led the Washington College offense with five goals and two assists, while Kirby registered three goals and two assists. Junior Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) logged 11 saves between the pipes.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Monday as it travels to Hood College for a 4:00 pm contest.

LEXINGTON, VA -- Senior attackman Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored the game-winning goal with 58 seconds remaining in the extra session to lift 11th-ranked Washington College to a 12-11 overtime men's lacrosse victory over host Washington and Lee this afternoon at the W&L Turf Field in Lexington, VA. The Shoremen improved to 4-0 on the season with the win, while the Generals fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Washington and Lee jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the game after one quarter as Ned Rider scored back-to-back goals with 2:47 and 37 seconds remaining, respectively, to give the Generals the three-goal cushion after one period.

The score remained 5-2 for over six minutes into the second quarter before the Shoremen reeled off four unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead at the half. Senior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored the final two goals of the half with 4:17 and 2:27 remaining, respectively, to put the Shoremen in front.

The Generals tied the score eight seconds into the third quarter as Rider scored off a feed from Will Keigler. Washington regained the lead with 10:22 remaining as junior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) found senior attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) for a goal to make it 7-6. W&L knotted the score again when Seth Fishman scored a man-down goal off an assist from Griffin Bealle with 8:58 remaining, but the Shoremen answered immediately as Kielek scored off a feed from Kirby eight seconds later. Washington extended its lead to 9-7 when Read assisted on a Kirby goal with 5:56 left in the third quarter. The Generals trimmed that lead back to one goal 18 seconds later when Harry St. John scored an unassisted goal.
