Buchanan's Six Points Lead Buckeyes over Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind six points from senior Kevin Buchanan and four-point games by sophomore Mario Ventiquattro and junior Joel Dalgarno, the Ohio State men's lacrosse team defeated Penn State, 17-6, Saturday on the turf field inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Junior Peet Poillon also contributed three goals in the win, the Buckeyes' second-consecutive over the Nittany Lions. Ohio State moves to 2-2 this year, while Penn State falls to 1-3.

Oho State jumped out to a 3-0 lead 5:40 into the game on goals by Dalgarno (12:15), Buchanan (10:38) and Jeff Ryan (9:20). The Nittany Lions responded with three-consecutive goals to tie the game at 3-all. Andrew Mackrides scored at 6:59 before Anthony Basciano and Brian Shea scored 38 seconds apart at 2:38 and 2:01, respectively.

The Buckeyes then went on a three-goal run to regain the lead they would not again relinquish. Junior Doug Ruhnke put the Buckeyes ahead with just four seconds left in the first quarter with his first of two goals on the day. Buchanan scored back-to-back goals early in the second, assisted by Ventiquattro at 14:14 and an unassisted tally at 12:19. Penn State's Ryan McAleenan ended the Buckeye run at 11:17, making the score 6-4. Poillon and Buchanan scored 29 seconds apart, at 9:39 and 9:10, and Ventiquattro found Poillon for a man-up goal at 3:08 to close out the scoring in the half. The Buckeyes carried a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Ohio State carried the momentum into the second half. Poillon scored his second man-up goal of the game at 12:44, assisted by James Green. Dalgarno then set up Ventiquattro for a man-up tally at 9:30, followed by a goal of his own at 4:37. Penn State's Andrew Mackrides scored with seven seconds remaining in the third quarter to end the Buckeyes' six-goal run. The Buckeyes held a 12-5 advantage through the third.

Buckeye senior Josh Funk opened the scoring with a goal 39 seconds into the fourth quarter, followed by a Green goal, assisted by Buchanan, at 10:24. Mackrides scored a man-up goal at 8:53 to make the score 14-6. Ohio State scored the final three goals of the game for the 17-6 final. Ruhnke, assisted by Buchanan, tallied at 5:51, followed by Ventiquattro's goal, set up by Ryan, at 3:47. Dalgarno scrod the game's final goal at 1:52.

The Buckeyes outshot the Nittany Lions in the game, 34-28. Senior goalie Stefan Schroder played 57:14 for the Buckeyes, allowing six goals and making 10 saves. Sophomore Brandon Freeman saw 2:46 of action, making two saves in the fourth quarter. In the Penn State net, Drew Adams had 12 saves and allowed 16 goals in 56:13. Greg Boyle allowed one goal in 3:47 and did not make a stop.

The Buckeyes were a season-best 3-for-4 on man-up chances in the game. Penn State was 1-for-4 on extra-man opportunities.

COLUMBUS, Ohio; March 8, 2008 – The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team dropped a tough 17-6 road game at Ohio State in non-conference lacrosse action. An injury-plagued Penn State squad managed only two goals in the second half as Ohio State pulled away for the win.

The Nittany Lions hung close early, trailing only 4-3 after one period on goals from Andrew Mackrides (Newtown Square, Pa.), Anthony Basciano (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Brian Shea (Gaithersburg, Md.). But the Buckeyes outscored Penn State 5-1 in the second period to lead 9-5 at the break. Ryan McAleenan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) scored Penn State's only goal in the second period.

The Buckeyes continued to build on their lead with a 3-1 edge in the third period and a 5-1 edge in the fourth to post the final score. Mackrides got both of Penn State's second half goals.
